Thanks for the info on the tracing paper. I'm trying to work up a load for a 45-70 as well. I haven't shot any group worth running through a chronograph yet. But, I'm getting closer.

Instead of using tracing paper between the base of the bullet and the wad, I have always used Wax Paper. I kind of doubt it really makes any difference as to what you use but it was easy to find, most any grocery store will have it, its cheap, you can get a bunch of wads from a roll. Just make sure that there is your roll and her roll. IF not you will finish her roll and forget to tell her. NOT a good idea if you like her cooking.

Ok update, tried Don's recommended 62 grs Swiss 1 1/2 with BR 2s with the PJ 540 I also sent some 510 baco with the same charge.[Image: 716067100b4b99b635947dac00120503.jpg]
62 grs Swiss 1 1/2 and 540 PJ .30 veggie required no compression just drop tube probably could go with a .60 wad to really ingage the rifling. [Image: 8111a56396dbde946d30c87a42e7cc36.jpg]
The wind picked as bad as ever but could break the shots in the calm moments 3 in the same hole [emoji6]at 200yds . The BR 2s E.S. of 2 is my best so far! Surprisingly to me the 510s we're only 5 fps faster.
I wonder if 1gr more powder would get the 540 to touch the rifling with .30 wad with no compression. Thanks Don for heading me in the right direction.[emoji16]

Glad to be of some help. I like the looks of those chronograph numbers.
Are you adjusting the parallax and focus on that scope for each distance you're shooting?

I also marked the base of the 20 to 1 540 bullets 62grs with a sharpie . When the snow melts it will be interesting to see what the slump difference is compared to 74 grs swiss the slump is .11 thousandths and 6 thousandths with 69 gr. charge. Seems a 20 to 1 540 gr bullet slumps

I have only shot 200yds with the constant winds lately. I'm putting together 5 my best loads and see how they group at 500m. Parallax adjustment ok will do ... I haven't been adjusting the Parallax at the bpcr shoots is that something I should be doing ?

You should be able to adjust to the turkeys and be in pretty good shape on everything else, but I do know a coupe of scope shooters that adjust for every target.

Try a .060 fiber wad. This will give a better gas seal.
X2 on wiping the bullets 'butt' before seating.
Also-Are you checking the bullet run-out of the loaded round? You want a T.I.R. of .003 or less.
Bullet run-out plays a bigger part in consistent accuracy, than many folks think.
What kind of bullet 'speed' are you seeing?

Why didn't I think to adjust for the Turkeys being closer to midway than the 200m its set for. That should have dawned on me . I know you Guys have covered this many times over .... I know cuz I've searched every topic I try to my due diligence figuring it out .
I have a shootin crew but they like the extreme range stuff .They get a kick out of my "Quigley" chit . I also shoot Kirby Allen rifles a 338 Allen Xpress 300 grs 3200fps and a 408 Chey Tac that send a 400 gr at a good clip as well. Something about that hang time from boom to smack .
408 400 gr coppernickel lathe turned. 120 grs Retumbo zoom zoom .

snocat, look out , what ever you do don't try any of the long range stuff with your smoke pole. Smile
Biggest thing to keep in mind when your shooting this old school stuff, things that won't even make one of your high-power bullets blink, will make these old lead pumpkins puke their guts out. Relax and enjoy the ride.
