My new .44-75 Ballard - Kurt - 07-07-2014

Well Everything is now in the hands of the CPA rifle Co.
I finally got the barrel from the Oregon gun works. It's a .438 bore/.446 groove 1.260" at the breach and 1.015" at the muzzle 34.5" long. It has enough iron to get a fine 1.250X1X32" finish.
It has a 6 land 1/16 ROT. And it will also have a 28" Douglas premium interchangeable .22 rimfire barrel of the same contour for the .22 rimfire matches and off hand practice to come with it.
Got the barrel and reamer send off this morning and had a chat with Gail for the final order.
Now the wait begins!! I asked, will it be ready for the Raton Nationals?? She said maybe Tongue

I also ordered a case sizing die reamer and I made two sizing dies to form the brass to match this chamber.

The chamber will only except a PP bullet and it will have a very flat 4 degree/1.5 degree compound lead that is very close to the original chamber.

Please pardon my ignorance, not knowing spit about CPA rifles or their interchangeable barrel system;

Is this something you can do at the range or does it need an action or barrel vise and a torque wrench to accomplish?

It certainly sounds like a cool project! Smile

Ed, the barrel threads into the action by hand and is locked in place with an Allen screw. It's very easy to swap barrels. I've got one in .38-55 / .32-40.

Chris.

Kurt, is that compound leade 4 degrees from case mouth to groove diameter, then 1.5 degrees the rest of the way?

My .38-55 has a 1.5 degree leade and it likes bore diameter PP bullets.

thanks,

Chris.

Chris.

The 4° starts at the case mouth instead the normal 45° transition now used in most chambers. The 1.5° is in the throat to the top of the lands. Yes it makes a long lead angle but it works quite well and the whole bullet is supported from the ogive to the shank when you patch it slightly over bore diameter.
I have rifles with this type of chamber in 4° and 5°/1.5 and 2.5° and they shoot quite well using GG or bore diameter or groove diameter PP bullets.

I just found the CPA website. Kurt, I can see why you are having a rifle built. Big Grin

Ed.

I favor the Sharps rifle over any of them, but at age 74 that is just a few weeks off I just don't have the time left to wait for a Sharps to get build. Smile

I'm a bit younger than you and I don't have the time either.

That's why I ordered one through Bill Goodman. Big Grin It's still well passed the "anticipated delivery date". I guess that's why it's the "anticipated" date.Smile

I've always been fascinated with single shot rifles. I guess it comes from being given one as my first rifle when I was seven years old. I inherited the Crackshot 26 that was my granddad's first rifle and my Dad's first rifle.

I looked at those CPA's and could envisage a .30-40 Krag and a .32-20 barrel in the Sporting Rifle configuration.

Please post pictures when you get your rifle!

Ok I have the rifle shooting Smile
I still have some work on the final finishing of the wood. But you know how it is when a little Kid gets a new toy he just has to play with it and get it dirty Tongue
Here are some pictures sanding it down and the first coat of tong oil. I have three coats on it now, enough to seal it for the midrange match this weekend. I don't have a load worked for it yet but it don't matter.
