Which run-out tool do I need to check and correct any wobblers I may find in my reloads? I see that Hornady and RCBS make them, and possibly others.

Jim the RCBS Casemaster works good for me on my smokeless loaded jacketed bullet loads for modern centerfires. I don't worry about runout with my patched ppb's. when seated way out they are almost all in the rifled part of the barrel. bobw

Currently, my run-out is 0.002-3", maybe not enough to be concerned. But with the bullets seated to engrave the front driving-band, straight loads are somewhat important.

Hey there Jim:
Early on in my learning curve with BPCR one of the more well respected shooters advised me 0.001 or less--------------the targets proved he was exactly correct-----------group sized was reduces by 50% with "straight" cat'ridges.
I built my own runout checking fixture and "straightened" a dummy cartridge till the runout was less than 0.001-then carefully formed the nose punch with epoxy putty and the dummy round.
Worked pretty well, had to make few punches until it got where i wanted to be
Case neck condition ----cleanliness, appropriate chamfering and a quality expander punch to establish and control correct neck tension are all part of low runout numbers

I use the RCBS Casemaster and check runout on the front driving band. It does not provide a means of correcting excessive runout. Anything over .003" is sorted into the fouling shot section of the ammo box. Variations in wall thickness at the neck can make runout a constant problem. The RCBS tool can measure neck thickness and tell you if you need to turn the necks make your loads more consistant. It will also check for incipient case separation. With an accessory I've even used it to sort 22lr by rim thickness.

I now have the RCBS tool and after resetting bullet-seaters, etc. my BPCR reloads are @ 0.000 run-out. Very nice stuff !

being new to this type sport, could you further explain your "resetting bullet-seaters, etc."

In the past, I didn't have my seating die set down very close to the shell-holder. The bullet alingment area in the upper portion of the seating-die was slightly too high to aling the bullet properly. Not so now, hope this helps.
