44-40?

Anyone using or used a 44-40 rifle with black powder to hunt?

I haven't but I would. I have shot the factory loads as well as bp loads and the bp loads seem to have a lot more zip to them. If the bp loads shoot well no reason to not used them.

Hey Sarge, If you read some of the old books or journals from the 1870s and 1880s you'll find comments from hunters who thought the .44/40 was too big for deer. That was one of the thoughts which made the .38/40 welcome. Today we don't see a whole lot of difference between those two rounds. Anyway, if you place your shots with the good ol' .44 W.C.F. it will make meat for you, no problem. Shoot sharp, Mike

Many thanks for the responses. I've been itching for another lever rifle. Been looking at 45-70's to go with my Hartford. Had the thought, why not get something new, too me, caliber, which led me to this. It certainly has my fancy.

Sarge, You certainly will have a wide range to pick from including modern replicas to old original rifles. I'm enjoying the Uberti '73 copies I have which include a carbine and a couple of sporting rifles. The one I don't have is a '73 with the 30" barrel but I do have a C. Sharps Arms low-wall with a 28" barrel. That low-wall is a real shooter and I've used it in some black powder cartridge short range matches without doing too bad. One reason I do like the '73s is that they are from the same era as the Sharps '74s. It just seems natural that they might have been in the same camp. Shoot sharp, Mike

Thanks,Mike. You are correct, Sir. Hard not to like a 73. A little hard for me to swallow that the Uberti is not American made. Been looking at the Henry's for that reason, but like the looks of the 73 better. You have no complaints with the Uberti's, I take it?

I still get the hots for one of the new Winchester 73's... Saw and handled one in 357 but talked myself out of it. Not sure I could do that with a 44-40/
