CPA word to the wise.

The match at Phoenix was a lot of fun, but gun trouble up the wazzee....
The stock on the 45-90 browning cracked in the wrist.
So the logical thing to do was dig out the CPA,, it shot decent, but on Sunday when I really needed it to turn on things went goofy and it wasn't ammo problems or bad breaks on the target.
Today dragging stuff in and putting away. I decided to break that rifle down, because there appears to be a slight gap at the bottom of the barrel and the action.. So I put my allen wrench in to loosen the screw, and lo and behold that screw was loose, I mean really loose..
So if things start going goofy with your CPA, first thing I would check is the barrel screw..

I haven't had this problem Don with mine. The once I change the barrels on the screw gives a loud crack when they break loose.
Paul suggests when you change the barrels turn the barrel on to snug still not centered and let the screw finish turning the barrel tight.
Bummer on the Browning. You didn't give Carol a horizontal buttstroke that broke the wrist did you?

Maybe a drop of blue #242 Loctite could be used with a torque driver?

I'm thinking that might be a fix for it. The biggest problem would be doing a shooting test to find the sweet spot with the torque wrench, then lactating it back at the same torque.

Do you have an adjustable in/lb torque driver?
Just set the screw with your hand and then confirm with the t'driver. Go up 5in/lb after each testing session till you reach max. rated fastener torque.
Do you know the size and thread count on this set screw?
I don't know CPA's all. Where does this screw fit??

Well I'm going to put this rifle to rest in the back of the safe.
Eron is going to fit the 44-100 barrel to the other action , so it won't be a switch barrel gun anymore. Guess I'll need to figure out whether to sell the 40-65 barrel, or keep it just in case.
