Sounds like you were doing something right with your front stuffers. Perhaps what ever you were using on your patch, and how much of it you were using was helping you a lot. Yes fowling can be a problem with cartridge guns. The combination of the primer, the power, the lube all have a part in how well things work. I think a person could pretty much spend a lifetime doing experiments with all the variables available. And them just about the time you think you have everything all figured out, have the perfect bullet, lube, powder, primer and wad, something else is gonna change.
Sometimes I wonder if us BP shooters wouldn't be ahead of the game to just shave our heads so that we don't have any hair available to pull out.
