If you need a free Office program, I recommend Open Office. It isn't fabulous, but it does work.

I have open office on all our machines and I have found it to be more than adequate for our daughter's high school assignments, etc. each iteration keeps getting better and better, and I have not found any issues with compatibility with microsoft's products.
