40-50 Smokeless - Steveu - 11-17-2023

All,
I sold my 40-50 to my neighbor who wants to load smokeless for it. He wants it for plinking and hunting pigs/deer. Bullets are the RCBS CSA 350 and SAECO 640. He has some 3031 on hand and I have some N135, N140, 2400 & Trailboss. I may be able to scrounge up some 5744. Anyone have any loads with what I have to use?

Cheers,
Steve

40-50 Sharps Straight or BN ? I can look up either on Load Data.com
Kurt’s got you covered.

Randy,
Is a bottleneck. Most likely going to use 3031.

Kurt,
Thanks for the links.

Good that it’s the bottle neck, Load Data only shows one load from Mike Venturino and it’s a BP load for the Straight..
The load data web site shows 3031 not being very accurate,I suspect it’s a bit slow for the cartridge. Hopefully it works for you as I have 8 lbs of it and a Shiloh 1874 Military Carbine on order that will be chambered for the darling little cartridge. Do keep us apprised of your findings with your friends progress.

Old rule of thumb taken from ancient load manuals, say to start at 25% and go no higher than 45% of the black powder charge when using 2400, and 30% not to exceed 50% of the blackpowder charge with 4198 and 4227. the same could probably work with 5744, but staying on the lower end probably be the best.
My 40+ year old Cartridges of the World list 21 gr. of 4198 with the 260 grain bullet.

RE: 40-50 Smokeless - Steveu - 11-21-2023

Thanks Don for the info. I was considering a starting charge of 20-22 grains for the smokeless, based on my 52 grain charge with the Saeco 640 I have been using.

As long as the rifle is a modern rifle, you'll likely be ok, but I would definitely not start with 50% of the black powder charge weight.

It’s a Shiloh that was made in the early 90’s.
