Hey Cap, Yes, a 200 grain does work well. But for me those hit a bit low and I'm thinking a 235 will have enough more barrel time to be raised a bit by the gun's recoil. For me using .44 Russian ammo with the 250 grain bullet hits better. So, there's my answer, yes, but mainly for the sake of nostalgia I'd rather use .44 Colt ammo and that case just wouldn't look right with a .44 Russian bullet seated in it. I have a 72 open top in a 38 Special! It's one of those pistols where anyone that shoots it feels like a crack shot, it's just plain accurate and so enjoyable to shoot.

Stephen, You're right and that tiny rear sight on the back of the barrel is easier to see than I expected. Even so, my choice was the Richards-Mason version with the rear sight in the top of the hammer. And that sight can be hard to see for my eyes. Those .38s are good hitters. Shoot sharp, Mike

Just a wee bit of an update, I loaded some of the .44 Colts with the 200 grain .44/40 bullet (Lyman's 427098) over 5.5 grains of Unique powder for a try. My rifle shooting today was not the best and I only fired 5 shots with the .44 Colt revolver. Those 5 shots, however, made the best shooting I did today. They hit real well. Still a bit low but with the 5.5 grains the powder burned very cleanly and the shots grouped quite nicely. On top of that, it is still a good light load. Next I'll try another five shots with 5.7 grains of Unique just to see how it works. Shoot sharp, Mike

Hey Cap, Recoil was simply absent. Of course, some good black powder loads take care of that. What I'm really interested in is a good light load, more than likely smogless, that I can hit things with. And, like I said, the five shots fired today are on the trail headed in that direction.
