Consider Swiss in 2X for powder and don't push things too hard loading as low as mid 50's of that powder will surprise you poly wads are also nice

It's obvious your already having fun. Stay Safe

Dave
Hey Dave, one more turkey and you would have shared in the big turkey money with Dan and Bryan at the state shoot. Enjoyed shooting with you again. LB

Black powder is about all I shoot anymore. I enjoy learning something new and have really liked working with black powder. So satisfying to use the same stuff used back in the day and get results that are pretty close too. Yesterday I shot a 2 1/4" x 7/8" five shot group at 200 yards with a Shiloh Sharps Hartford 45-110 with Vernier sights. Not the best group ever shot, but my 30.06 rifle with the 9 power scope on it would struggle to do that well. Shot 6 for 6 on the steel too. Keep working with the black powder - you will love it! Only reason I posted the score is so you will go out with your rifle and do better. Which I am sure you will soon. Also I found a leather slip on recoil pad is nice to use - recoil no factor then.

[attachment=877]Follow up to going to dark side, range report.
First some details. This project has started after my 73rd winter. So please pardon the economy approach. With best intent an order was placed for a Uberti Classic 1885 High Wall with DST in 40-65 caliber. However due to SNAFU with that vender, the order was canceled. Fortunately the payment was returned 100%, but no rifle. With mold, wads & brass on the way there was nothing for it but to again search for a rare item. Providence may have had a hand as a rifle was located at Dixie Gun Works. The qualifier is the Specs. A NIB Petersoli ’74 Sharps Silhouette rifle, with DST, Pistol grip and Shotgun Butt AND 1:16 30 inch 40-65 barrel. Yes indeed it is modest gear but note I may not have months or years to wait on most popular rifles made in Montana ? This Sharps arrived in under a week’s time. It’s equipped at present with factory blade front and historic mid barrel flip sight. It only arrived in hand last Monday 24th. It was dutifully cleaned and bore scrubbed. “We” were going to local Silhouette gong match on 26th. Some hasty loads were prepped. Inaugural outing was just for show and tell. 20 Starline cases were loaded with Black Horn 209 (fill to bullet base and one card wad added) The mold acquired is Lyman 410655 410 gr. Actual cast with alloy in pot yielded 418 grs. After the regular silhouette competition Wednesday this new Sharps was uncased and shared along with the hand loads. My goal was actually to get fired brass for experiment in real dark loads ? Subsequently the fired brass was cleaned and cases belled slightly. It was found necessary to first size brass about ½ inch in neck area to suit minimal fit over 0.410 sized bullets. (plenty room in chamber). The brass was checked with primer pocket reamer and the flash holes were uniformed from inside. Here is the first BP load. Primers used are Fed 215 Mag. The Beldin & Mull powder measure was clamped to loading bench. After some measuring including pushing bullet into bore at breach, brass measure was adjusted to 30.0 mark. The hopper was filled with GEOX 2F (only BP at emporium for now). The charges were slowly passed through a 6 inch drop tube and one 1/16 card wad placed over powder. Along with reloading items gathered is a LEE 0.410 press mounted push thru die. The cast bullets were hand lubed with SBG grease and passed thru the die to smooth lube. The stem from Lee Die was cleaned and used for powder stack compression. During trial and error setting an ink mark was made on this metal piece at powder level. After the powder was dropped and wad installed the metal stem was press down until the mark again. One guess is that made the powder compression equal to 1/16th. The lubed bullets can be seated by hand. When the bullet sits on the card wad there exist two lube groove showing about case mouth. This Pedersoli chamber just happens to accept the bullets as cast seated that far out. Since it ended toward getting full measure of BP behind bullet I let the machine tell what was needed. BTW the Beldin & Mull brass tube so filled (lever held to right until flow observed to stop, then powder shuttle cycled back once to settle dropped charge), it turned out to throw weighed 50.0 grs 2F GEOX. Today rifle and these FIRST REAL BP loads went to the range. Targets set at 100 yds. The factory sight presently impact a bit off center. So some hold over was used. The elevation with sight stem flat appeared right on for 6:OO hold. See attached photo of last five rounds today. The %%# one out on right is this geezers fault. As sometimes done guys give an enduring name to rifles such as Ol’ Reliable. I’ve decided on “LUCY” for this one based on the Comedic Icon. Proof is in the shootin. With obtaining Old E powder ahead and all the good advice in these threads I think she’ll shoot ?

RE: Coming over to Dark side - Hiwall55 - 04-28-2017

Thank god you didn't get the Uberti Hiwall with the 410 groove diameter barrel.
The Pedersoli Sharps that you have is a fine shooter. Now spend some money on good sights and you'll be there.

Field report on shooting Holy Black in 40-65. The 1st occasion for rifle and shooter was registered BP match @ Alma Michigan, A.P. Goodrich Silhouette range June 10th. Schedule only allowed one day at this weekend competition. Tech details as follows: 100 Starline brass once fired. Installed Fed 215 mag primers, weighed 59.0 grs. GEOX FF. Dropped charge slowly down 26 inch tube then Compressed powder with one 1/16th fiber wad on top approx. 3/10 inch. Seated lubed 410655 Lyman (418 gr) by hand with one grease grove showing. 2.875” OAL. The lube this time was home brew Bees Wax mix. This proved fine for keeping any leading in check at 1200 fps velocity. As noted the bore was swabbed between shots & this really pushed the timed fire sequence. I got off 59/60 record shots during match. The one operator error was to attempt to get shot off before time was up without swabbing. That cartridge, fortunately the 5th of string, would not seat with thumb. A slight roll crimp was used just enough to hold bullet in place. Firing tests and sighting in showed swabbing between shots to be rule #1. Week prior to match the same load was fired at 200 yards and 300 meters from bench. These hard sight elevation settings were interpolated into elevation table for this 30 inch barrel & Lee Shaver long range soule sight. Actual shooting during sight in period proved calculations were within 1-2 points of the settings needed for 200, 300, 385 & 500 meters. At least that was working for this 40-65. Keeping up with bore maintenance, wind, smoke blocked seeing and just plain fuzzy vision provided plenty excited entertainment. Bottom line I’m hooked on BP as a challenging way to shoot steel. I’m not certain the change in propellants will stick but I’m having a real hoot learning this method ?

Good for you. Keep at it as eventually, you will not want to shoot that rifle with anything but black. I know that it requires cleaning directly after shooting where smokeless does not but the job need not take long.

+1
I love shooting black - about all I do anymore!

M-2 it was good to see you at Alma. I looked for you in the morning like a dog looking for a warm spot on a cool day to roll up in the sun. Smile
Are you going to make the July four day match? it will be a .22 and three 40 shot black powder, plus they furnish a very nice meal in the big house after the Saturday match.

Kurt & all, as has been said the Alma venue is a challenging place with good people and welcome mat is always out. I'm bit conflicted now as to how many rounds can a man of 73 "get in" before his bucket list chit is called in. So many places and so little time. I do plan to put foot at Alma again some time. July is also draw 40 miles East of me at Camp Perry too. For more than 4 decades we hardly missed that religious experience in High Power Rifle fame. Certainly have lost count of all the 30 caliber rounds fire to North to keep the Red Coats off the North shore of these here United States Tongue So now I have been bitten by this BPCR thingy too LOL. I must say shooting under roof in 95 degree heat as now possible does have soon strong appeal. The Nationals at Camp Perry still has appeal also for the foraging that may be done on Commercial Row. The one down side however is that if one enquires of Old E at an emporium the stunned proprietor may only mumble something like " I think there's old guy called that in hut 37" ;-) To friends on dark side let me say keep yer powder and pants dry and eyes on the horizon for me. I understand that. I have a few years on you but I don't let that slow me down. I gave up the Baker and the Q this year, the first since 04 because of Carolyns health. One has to do what he has to do. I just wish I lived closer to Alma, but the 6 1/2 hour drive through the concrete jungles east of me will not keep me away.
