Mike I never owned a .50-70 but shot one several times. They all were the roller carbines and I was very impressed how well that cartridge shoots. I keep saying this is my last rifle
but I woud like a little .50 in a 74 military carbine for swinging bowling pins.Kurt

Hey Kurt, A .50/70 would sure make those pins swing. There is nothing "sluggish" about a .50/70. About a year ago I let a friend try my 26" barreled '74 (pictured) .50/70 at a 'chicken' out at 200 meters, offhand. He didn't have to hold as high as he expected. Then, after shooting my rifle, he lasted only 3 days before ordering one for himself. His .50/70 is a Hunter's Rifle/Carbine from C. Sharps Arms with the 26" barrel. They're really made for shooting! He mostly shoots paper patch now and that's his horseback hunting rifle. [attachment=949] Mine is my "camp gun." Shoot sharp, Mike

Welcome Bohica793, You have fallen into the right place. I have similar backwash in Smokeless loading, over 50 years of it. However when bit by the Black Powder bug this web site and these fine people were most generous in allowing newbie questions + supplying genuine answers. From exchanging messages I cense there exists much wisdom and age old sage advice here. One guess the acuminated years of expertise might equal a gazillion
So set aside some reading time, stock up on coffee and donuts. Just when ya feel yer head is full look down on the subject title list for "Publications" and refill you mug

Kurt, That .50/70 has a #1 Heavy barrel, half-round, 26" long and the gun weighs and even 10 pounds, until it is loaded... I'll probably have it along with me at Quigley next June so I'll bring some ammo so you can give it a good try, maybe at the bucket. Shoot sharp, Mike[attachment=954]

[attachment=955] And today I did some shooting with my rolling block 50/70, again using the 450L2 bullets over 65 grains of OE 2F. Shooting was done rather early today and smoky and cloudy skies made the range rather dark. Even so, I was pleased with the shooting and now I have some good notes to work from when this gun is taken out again.
The second picture shows two 5-shot groups. The group on the left side was shot first, then a slight windage adjustment to the left before shooting the group on the right. Where that high 9 at 10 o'clock came from I don't know... My fault, of course.[attachment=956]
