You amy be right, Kurt but after playing with this rifle a while and doing a bit more research, I find that some of these only held 4 rounds, the originals that is. I will fiddle with this a bit more and see if I can not find another couple thousandths somewhere in that magazine and lifting mechanism. The rifle sure does plant 215 grain bullets in nice little clusters. A peabody remake of the Lyman 21 is getting grafted to the receiver so my old eyes will have a peep sight.

My first exposure to the 1895 was at the 2004 (IIRC) Quigley. A cowboy was tryin' to get on the 600 yd. target and asked if I could spot for him, sure enough. He fired, I spoted, and again and again. We had a good time. The target rang once or twice, I think. Upon firing the last shot, I asked his name, "here and there I'm known as Ranch 13" he said. Nice guy, I though

Way back in the 60s, I had a pristine original 1895 lightweight take down in 30-06.
Damn mean gun on the shoulder . So, Sold it. no regrets
maybe 6-8 years ago, I picked up a 1895, caliber 38=72, with an Win 21 sight, too, no less.
Well, It would not work with my brass from my other 38-72 --405 hornady brass formed,etc.
Rims too thick. Could have recut the chamber with my DT 38-72 reamer, but decided not to.
The rifling twist was very slow for light orig express loadings.
So, down the road it went.
This one, hindsight, I should have kept and hunted with
beltfed/arnie
