Jim,
My reommendation for the 457125 500gr RN Gov't bullet is especially regarding
Kurt's comment about easy reload as this bullet is designed with the small diameter of the Nose for clearance
for fouling

Would you cast from a softer alloy than what is commonly used for long range target shooting?

RE: Bullet advice - beltfed - 04-05-2023

Jim,
For the BP load velocities, I would probably go with a 16+1 or maybe 20+1 lead/tin alloy
assuming a broadside heart/lung shot.
But, Kurt , who has shot several Bison should answer this question.

RE: Bullet advice - Kurt - 04-05-2023

I used 1/20 for all of my hunts. I want a complete pass through to vent the boiler room. they go down quicker.
The last one I shot I had to put three shots all three hit just above the heart on the lower part of the lung.
The Bison is a tough animal. If you are close enough where you feel confident to take a head shot behind the ear he will drop on the spot but if you want to mount the scull there wont be much solid enough to hold the hide.
I used the .44-77 for two and the .44-90 bn for the first. All three I used the original Sharps bullet profile patched.

Just back from an exciting and successful hunt. The bullet I chose was the BACO 510 Creedmoor. I tested it carefully to be sure I could load it easily for follow up shots. However follow ups weren’t needed. The shot was perfectly placed and the Buffalo went about ten yards and collapsed.
Kudos to the Mickelson family for a wonderful hunting experience!

Awesome Jim.

More details Jim. My freezer is empty of Bison meat.
I been looking for a new place to fill the freezer.

Kurt,
Now that I’ve had a taste of bison, I understand your concern with the empty freezer.
Give me a few days to try to figure out how to post pictures here and I’ll try putting together the story.
