Don, I believe from your description what Doc has is a Long Range Express model just about identical to my 50-3 1/4". They came std with a 34" barrel with the globe and pin with ballhead frt sight, no rear barrel sight and a sporting tang rear. Whereas the #1 had a std frt silver blade with rear barrel sight and a 30" barrel. I happen to have a copy of the "The American Sharpshooter" Vol #1 Edn 1 Spring of 1984 as a reference to this. bobw

It sure could be the LRE, now that you mention it. This one has just the straight pin in the globe, and looks to be a 3/8's dovetail.
Serial in in the 5900 range.

Bob, I don't have a .40 so your mould isn't the best "bait" right now. Let me pass on it but thanks for the offer.
Don, BACO offers some paper patch bullets in .504" diameter that would be good for that Farmer. Just a thought. Shoot sharp, Mike

Don I got some stuff lined up to send today , the grease groove bullets are kinda rough , the mould is still new and isnt totally burned in yet but they are acceptable , there is some of Bobw s 500 flat bases and some of my origional 473s I dont have a template I use a paper cutter from fiskars from the craft store they are way simpler to use than a template and you can adjust them without a grinder,...some wads and patches ,,, the patches are long but work better than short ones , once you get a twist on the tail cut it off, and push down the remainder,
I have only shot 10 of the greasers so have no idea how they work but the others have shot the buff at quigley plenty of times , thats all I was looking for,for the slow twists a bullet about an inch long seems to be the best bet,

Thanks Dean. This is going to be a lot of fun with Doc, it'll be interesting to see whether he goes with patched, or greasers, or decides to do a little of both. I got a feeling that case of Cartidge I have isn't going to last long once we get a bullet decided on..

Don, How are ya sittin' on wads for this project. I have a .50 cal wad cutter, and can make you about as many wads as you need from a variety of materials from wax paper up through felt (soft and hard) if that will help.

I'm a little late getting into this .50 project.
I really don't have anything that will work in a .50 Farmer with a cylinder freebore slow twist but it sounds like a fun project.

Update on this thing. Doc measured the twist at 26.
The bullets and such that folks sent have got here , and everything was/is looking good. Except for one thing... I thought poor Doc was going to collapse, he had ordered some stuff from Grafs, and by jing they stuck it right on FedEx, and it came in two days... Only problem was instead of 50-90 dies , they sent a box that said 444 Marlin 3 die set, that had only two dies in it, and neither one was anything we needed.. Haven't talked to him since that episode, so we're probably on hold for a few more days. Weather isn't zactly good for shooting anyway..
