It had to be the grace of God that the barrel ruptured vertically, and not horizontally w/ a bunch of shrapnel. That could have caused a bunch of casualties instead of just 1 casualty. Wonder how much previous barrel/action damage there was from wad(s) in smokeless loads in the past? Almost had to be more than the ringed chamber that was mentioned.

It would be interesting to measure the length of the remains of that case. If the chamber ringed at the location of the dovetail milled into the bottom of the barrel, it would make that spot (combination dovetail and ring at the same spot) weak and more likely to rupture there. The ring will occur near the bullet base, leaving the case shorter when it separates, right?

Manny if you look at the 1st picture you can see the case mouth about even with the dovetail for the lever spring mounting block.

Look'n closer at the chamber in the first picture-Is that the normal leade for those rifles? That's just doesn't look 'rite'.
Could the case have separated also??

No gun made here in the USA has to.

The Italian proof house only proofs those guns for what we would call saami spec pressures. No proof house is going to be able to compensate for folks that don't follow reloading manual and other instruction.

Proof loads for the 'Peter' are 30% above our SAAMI.
