Don yes it shows that it wants to shoot. But there are still some unexplained 4-5 shots vertical out of 20 shots fired that show up wandering out of a good cluster. At this point I will keep working with the sized down bullets with the new brass. Changing the diameter of a bullet it also changes the length of the shank and shortens the ogive as well as the total length of the bullet. In this case .023" increase in length of the bullet and the shank is .235" longer. Not good to down size bullets more then two thousands. This project is on hold till I get the mould from Brooks.
I still have a few ladder loads of Swiss and OE left and I'm shooting a silhouette match at Alma Mi. next weekend so I will take the .40 along and shoot some at the turkeys and see how the rams fall with the bottom end of the powder load.

I've found two things that give the unexplained verticle, other than trigger slapping. First is fouling control, just a wee bit of crud left somewhere will do that, and second is using paper that is to thick and bullets that run on the small side. Wad stack can play a role at times as well. But a consistent bore condition and paper are the biggest culprits.
Rifle after rifle has shown that the most consistent accuracy comes with a slick between .004 and .006 under bore wrapped to bore or just slightly over. The lone exception to that has been my 40-70, and the bullet it will shoot the most consistent is the .360 400 diameter creed moor bullet from the BACO mould, wrapped in 55w patch 3 /4 of an inch long.

Kurt, just shoot greasers. Mine really likes them. I wish I knew who made the mould but I bought it used and it's unmarked, possibly Brooks or Jones. Look like a Postel clone and mine are sized to .409.

Cant use a greaser Jim. Case neck unsized will not except a .404" and the bore in this barrel is .399".

Shot 68 rounds during the practice day and after the Sat. match with little Missy. I just had some different ladder loads as low as 53 gr of 1.5 OE and 2F OE and some swiss loads and it shot very well using a elliptical bullet at all ranges. I was very surprised the way it shot with the very light load of 53 gr on the rams. I missed one out of 5 shots but I think it is a minimum load for pushing rams over. They fell very slow and three when they fell had iron on the rail. One shot hit the horn and it fell very slow
58 gr of 1.5 Swiss did well on the turkeys, so well I wish I had a box full of that load to use for the match I think I will really like this rifle when I get the final load and bullet for this little rifle. I will say this, with a full house load of 2F OE I don't think the recoil is much less then some of the larger calibers I shoot but the 53 gr load of 1.5 OE will make a fine chicken load. Off the sticks if did not fail hitting all I shot when I got the sight on. I just about had to look to see if the empty case was smoking to know if the shot went off
