RE: Paper Patch question - Kurt - 08-14-2013 (08-14-2013, 08:39 AM)Don McDowell Wrote: Not marketing hype. It was what they determined was necessary for good shooting. Remington did not load a grease cookie or a wad ,the way Sharps did. Or maybe they had the same problem as I did. Remington had a lot of rounds with bottlenecked cases and not using a lube wad makes that dry paper grip the case neck and the results are case neck separation. Putting a lube wad in the case or using a little lube on the patch reduces that problem. I get a little case stretching with straight wall cases not using lube, but it's a bigger problem with the bottle necks. Just a thin coating of oil or Vaseline eliminates that problem for me. I think maybe Remington did away with the lube wad to increase the powder capacity. Kurt
RE: Paper Patch question - Dave Roelle - 08-14-2013 Kurt------Thanks for the insight !! I have checked cases (45/70) and so far nothing has moved from the trim length So to get lube between the patch and the case you lube the patched slug and insert it in the case?-----or during ignition the lube cookie is pushing itself between the patched bullet and the case and so getting slippery. I can't understand how lubing the patch outside the case as Don discribed would help the seperation problem ---- Again thanks Dave RE: Paper Patch question - Kurt - 08-14-2013 Dave, I lightly lube the outside of the whole patch if I dont use a lube wad. The cases I have the problem with are the .44-90 bn. They hold 100 to 110 grain of powder maybe the extra pressure those loads have plus the reduction of the case at the neck is the snake in the wood pile causing this. I do know that the same powder load in the bottle necked .44-90bn case drives the bullet a lot faster than the .44-100 straight. I can shoot a no lube bullet in the 100 with out pulling the neck off but I do get stretching. Kurt RE: Paper Patch question - Dave Roelle - 08-14-2013 Gotcha Kurt------------makes complete sense in dealing with the case seperation problem----------bet it was a shocker when ya ejected the first destroyed case ![]() I'm going to try the best dry patch load i find with the patch lubed and inserted in the case and see what happens Keep well and stay safe Dave RE: Paper Patch question - powderburner - 08-14-2013 I havent done it with jojoba yet but I do use rooster jacket on my patches for the 44 , just barely enough to dampen them I let them dry thoroughly before use , it seems to help in a match where a the cadence is broken by a foulup back up the line. RE: Paper Patch question - Don McDowell - 08-14-2013 Using jojoba oil on the patches in combination with that dry lubed felt wad, every round I fired at the Quigley was done so without the benefit of wiping, just a blowtube now and again. RE: Paper Patch question - Dave Roelle - 08-14-2013 Thanks for the continuation gentlemen !!! I finished assembling my next batch of test rounds----------i picked up some Jojoba at the local health food store-----------when one 5 shot group gets the nod as best in this test run i'll lube the remainding rounds and see if any difference become obvious ![]() Don, i have the felt from a local hat maker and will certainly try lubing some wads cut from it and continue testing. Suposed to cool down a few degrees this weekend perhaps it will help my concentration---this 97 degree stuff and 70% humidity can be a distraction Dave RE: Paper Patch question - Don McDowell - 08-14-2013 Dave try those felt wads as is with no lube on them. RE: Paper Patch question - Dave Roelle - 08-15-2013 Ok Don------------next go-around i'll try some lubed and dry and see how those combinations work--it'll be a couple of weeks, time to get the ranch ready for huntin, doves start first of september and its time to fill the feeders. Dave RE: Paper Patch question - Rick Mulhern - 08-22-2013 Guys....my experience with BN?? ZERO! But here's something to try: Get you an old timey shoe dauber....the kind we used to polish our shoes with and dip it into fine powdered graphite! Knock the excess off and run down inside your cases! Don't hurt squat as far as some getting onto the primer. You can invert the case and tap lightly on a cloth atop your bench and then load your powder. You will find that your compression pressure is much easier and ssssmmmmmooooottthhhh inside the case!
