Finally had a rain free day yesterday (Sunday), off to the range with the slug gun. Shot a slightly softer bullet than normal 1:35 in the morning and my standard of 1:30 tin lead. The 1:35 was not to great but the 1 :30 had 8 shots in a tight group with the other 2 opening the group up. I'll try and post the targets here.

Open an account with an online server, server?. I use Photo Bucket, it's free. Upload your pics to "PB" then copy the URL at the bottom of the file and paste it in your posts here. Not hard once you start doing it.

In Australia you can perhaps still find Airmail paper; high rag content about.0025 in thickness methinks. I tried many types of oil for patch lubing including jojoba. All seem to work about the same. The only oil that didn't work for me was synthetic motor oil. Patches left to soak too long in oil will become soft and will rip when you load them. A month or two is fine but if you are contemplating using patches lubed months ago make new patches. If you are having problems keeping the breech area of your barrel clean you are probably using a jag that is too big. I like a .36 jag and a larger patch when cleaning a .45 caliber rifle and use a .45 jag on my. 56. Cold wasser is great for cleaning between shots and afterward. I used to use wads in my slug and picket rifles but quit doing so because they shot better without them.

I'll try this weekend not using an overpowder wad. Made a stop on my cleaning rod of rubber tubing to clean below the top of the powdwer column but above the vent. Wil;l see what happens.
A friend who is a long range bprc shooter came across a source of 100% cvotton tracing paper on the cast bollits website. Appears that this particular paper manufacturer has the paper in 2/10ths of a thou increments. However it is rather expensive buying all the various thicknesses ju8st to try out.

Just recieved my summer editiopn of the Black Powder Cartridge News. There was a Ken Wasserburger listed in the score details of a long range BPCR match. I noticed in the equipment list that quite a few competitors used soluble oil as a patch lubricant.

Vlad that was to wipe the barrel in long range we run several 3 wet patches down the tube between shots. And yes thats me the same guy.

I've been shooting black powder carteridge rifles for over 20 years but we predominantly shoot schuetzen style matches over 100 and 200 yards. Most of us breech seat. A few are starting to look at shooting silhouete and long range. I have a 40-65 on a rolling block action that shoots uner an inch at 100 and 2 and a bit inches at 200 Bench rest. I'm hoping to be able to shoot fixed ammo with it for silhouette. As we do not use any reloading dies for breach seating I do not have any experience with such. But just placing the bullet in the case with fingers hasn't produced anythingi would consider even reasonable. Also my tapered bullet for BS may not be suitable for fixed ammo.
Any advice woiuld be greatly appreciated.

Tried the slug gun without a wad, ahot 10 shots at 100 with a wad and then 10 shots without similar sized groups 2 inches wide by 3 inches vertical.

How do you lube your patches. The guys here who shoot paper patched bullets roll the patched (wrapped ) bullet on an oily pad. I have plwenty of Wright whale oil that i use in my swage . Would it be suitable as a patch lube?
I don't have any experience with tapered paper patched bullets. I do use tapered grease groove bullets an my breech muzzle loading rifles and they are extremely accurate with the correct fit. The correct fit is when the top band just rides on the lands. I assume your paper patched bullet is unsupported at the nose?
I once asked Rich Hicks what type of oil is best. He told me just about any oil will work. I use Jojoba oil. After preparing my paper strips they are laid in an Altoids tin. The oil is added until all patches soak up the oil.
I'll get some paper to you.
