Need some info - Nuclearcricket - 10-10-2014
I recently got some once fired 44-40 brass and there were a couple of cases that were blown out straight with a pretty good sized radius on the case mouth. I suspect that they were fired in a 45LC chamber. I was wondering if one of you fine folks had and fired 45LC cases laying around that you could measure the case diameter about half way up the case and let me know what that is.

Mind you all I have to make such a measurement with is a set of calipers, and according to many of todays internet experts , those are not to be trusted....
But I have a measurement on ww once fired cases from a new model Vaquero of .484 about half way up the case, and just for kicks and grins 475 at the case mouth.

Thanks Don, that pretty much confirms my suspicions as that is very close to what I got with a micrometer on the case I checked. As far as how accurate or how much you trust your calipers that is pretty much an individual thing. I, as a retried toolmaker, have the goodies to be able to check the accuracy of both my mics and my calipers. I have 3 different size vernier calipers and they are quite accurate. I also have digital and dial calipers and they are accurate. The big thing is to be consistent in how you use them. If you have a 1" gage block you can check it with your calipers and depending on how much pressure you use to close your jaws on the block you will get a different reading.
