7 Degree Lead - Don Sketcher - 10-29-2014
Hello All
My first post here.
I am interested in opinions about the 7 degree lead that Shiloh is offering. Good or bad?
I have a rifle coming soon and am finalizing details.

I have 2 44-77's with the 7 degree lead and really think it's good.

Don't know, but I'm pretty sure once a person gets away from the 45* so common in modern rifles things only start to get better. I know the 4*2' lead in this CPA is a real joy to shoot.

Don, I sure like the leades in my .44s by C. Sharps, enough that I'll have them chamber the Oregon barrel for my .44 roller just to get the same leade.

Loving the 7 degree transition in the 44 I've acquired. I dont think I'd order another black powder single shot without the more shallow lead now. As Don and a few others have indicated in the past, I think if we get away from that abrupt 45 degree chamber end things improve. If paper patching is where you're heading then I think you'll be glad of the shallower lead. Works fine with gg also. Welcome.

I am thinking a #3 heavy, single trigger, shotgun butt, in .45-110.

I have a 7 degree, 5 and a couple 4 degree. I favor the 4 degree chamber transition into 1.5 lead. It shoots well with a PP and GG bullet.
If I design another reamer for a project it will be closer to the original 3 degree chamber end.

Mike... sorry I should have directed the question to the O.P. ...I gathered you were heading in the direction of a 44/77 but with the faster twist. I cant comment on any of the other lead angles as I've yet to try any... and I'm not right into paper patching for the 44 as yet. It's coming...but not yet.
D.S. .. A single trigger , 45 x 2 7/8" sounds interesting. I shot paper patch in my Shiloh 45/110 from the start and it shot pretty well with my novice attempts at patching at the time. It ran the standard Shiloh chamber ( which is fairly snug anyway ) and had the 45 degree chamber end. I did get paper rings...but not all the time. Case length can help here too.. regardless of what lead you have. Try and keep your cases full length. With Norma brass available now this shouldnt be a problem.
I seem to remember speaking with Kirk at Shiloh at one stage and he indicated that they run a shallow lead anyway ( cant remember the figure but less than 7) and the option using the different reamer just allows for a shallower transition from chamber end ->lead ->rifling. The 45 degree step is opened up effectively. At least thats my understanding of it. It certainly works in this 44 I have. Only wish I had it in my 50 and my sons 40 as well. Maybe the next one !
