One for three - Sfc Hawk - 01-07-2015 I drew three tags this year antelope, mule deer and elk. Got the antelope, the other were a bust. Deer season I saw some of the biggest bucks that I have seen in a long time. Six that were four point or better (eight point for eastron count) all within 50 yards standing shoots. Problem was I was on BLM and they were on privet. Many of the ranches that I was welcome on at one time have sold or the owner has died. I did pull the hammer back one time on a forky but I was in a rock pile he was across a narrow canyon ( fairly deep) wind was blowning a gale I couldn't feel my fingers nose was dripping it was a long way to the truck, legs were telling me no. So I let him go. Loved it. Saw a 7 point bull with 3 cows during deer season (the rut was on). From living in the desert his horns were white and his hide looked like rust. I didn't get a deer but I had a heck of a good time. Elk season was only 5 days never saw an elk But alot of big bucks again the their rut was on. But on a defermation I helped take an elk calf it wasn't big but sure is tender. The old springfield did it again. Drop like a sack of flour. Hope everybody had a Merry Christmas and you all have great new year. RE: One for three - Rick Mulhern - 01-07-2015 SFC Hawk Having a good time.....you did! And that's what it's all about! RE: One for three - Sfc Hawk - 01-07-2015 With 7 grandkid that think you can do no wrong, Christmas was a blast. Nice looking springfield, little newer than mine but she looks like a Marines rifle. Clean and honest. Hows she shoot? RE: One for three - Rick Mulhern - 01-07-2015 (01-07-2015, 06:32 PM)Sfc Hawk Wrote: With 7 grandkid that think you can do no wrong, Christmas was a blast. At 600 yards on a 20" bull it'll keep all inside with about 40% X count using the irons. That's shooting a Sierra 168 gr. bullet with 49 grs. H4895 with a F210M primer. I haven't pillar-bedded it yet but that's coming this spring when it warms up. I have 7 grandkids also! They're all a hoot! All shooters....all hunt! Age 20 down to age 5! RE: One for three - Sfc Hawk - 01-08-2015 Thats dang good shooting. Be interesting to know how she shoots after gets it bedded. I have used a lot of H4895 loading everything from ballard 38-50 to a 500-450 great stuff. Thats funny my grandkids go from age 20 to 4. Can't say they all hunt but 3 of them do. One of my grand daugthers ask me the other day "Pop when you die can I have your Colt 45"? Just wondering, was your first battle rifle a M14? Got a 3 day pass, airplane ride, engraved cigarette lighter and a letter of commendation from the CG commanding the post! One Saturday I asked the Top for a 2 hour pass to go to town. He asked me why? Told him my rifle as issued was a piece of schitt and I wanted to go get some shim stock and Elmer's glue and if he'd let me go I promised him I'd outshoot everybody in the Basic Training Command....which I did! Wound up shooting 3 1/2 years for the USAAMU at Ft. Benning! Had a ball!! |
