Arrgh - Don McDowell - 04-16-2015 Some days just seem to be not good for casting Was trying to get some more of the BACO 446525's and trying the KAL .444 tgbs , but I don't know whether it was the humidity or the cooler temps or what, but after about an hour I decided to call it quits for now. Hopefully I ended up with at least 25 of each to try.
RE: Arrgh - Old Jim - 04-16-2015 Some days casting is , and some days its ![]() ![]() !
RE: Arrgh - Don McDowell - 04-16-2015 Lots of truth in that one Jim.
RE: Arrgh - J.B. - 04-16-2015 I know your pain Don ! I've set days aside ...you know... no one at home or phone calls to interrupt. Cooler weather etc etc. Do all this to find you're flat out casting 10 decent bullets in a hundred. My son tells me ..that during those days its best to avoid me . If I only knew which days were going to work and which werent ...But then I'd probably know the lottery numbers as well then ![]() Gavin. RE: Arrgh - Don McDowell - 04-16-2015 Well said JB.. RE: Arrgh - Kurt - 04-16-2015 When I cast I turn the pot on. Take a nap. Wake up and cast about 10 throw them back in the pot. Cast 50 more maybe more, but no longer then an hour shut the pot off and take a nap and all are good
RE: Arrgh - Don McDowell - 04-16-2015 I let mine run about 45 minutes before I start casting. Usually throw the first dozen or so back. But today the KAL mould would either fin on one side, or want to put a little sliver of alloy down along half the base plug.. The BACO would drop a few with perfect bases, then it'ld take another 1/2 dozen to get good bases... So I ended up casting for an hour and from that I got 26 good bullets from the BACO mould and 30 from the KAL.. RE: Arrgh - Martini2 - 04-17-2015 Don, try again (after nap of course;-) We've all heard of some intrepid soul who starts casting ops with 100 Lbs. of perfectly matched ingots and runs the lot without a wrinkle +/- 0.01 grains Might have been that Lone Ranger using solid Silver cast slugs. Maybe adding Silver bullion to melt is what it takes. Let us know how that works. RB
RE: Arrgh - Cody Smith - 04-17-2015 I am glad someone else has the same problem! Like has been said above, I can't figure out why I can go out and cast 100 bullets, seldom have one stick and they will all be smooth and with a grain. The next day with the same everything, they all stick and they are plus or minus 10 grains! AAGGHH!! I think your plan is best, on those days just quit and try again later. Hopefully it is not the day before a match and you need them to shoot the next day...LOL take care, Cody RE: Arrgh - Don McDowell - 04-17-2015 Cody what I was trying to do was get enough of those BACO's to load for the match at Alliance. I have some loaded to test again, they shot decent at 800, but I haven't had a chance to run them at 1000 and probably won't until I get to Alliance now. So I figured with enough to test, and then enough to shoot the match should they do well enough.... I think where it's at right now I have enough to test and the match if I'm careful on the test rounds... Don't look like I'll be able to do the same with the KAL , but there's plenty of time to wring it out... |
