New 44-77 PP Mold - Denali - 06-12-2015 I haven't played with my sharps rifles in a while but having drawn a Wyoming moose tag this year I decided to draw up a bullet that might work with my 44-77 chamber (thanks Orville) with my batch of Jamison brass. It's a dual diameter tapered design that has an overall shape like an original round except for the small flat tip. It's listed under Accurate Molds as #44-410P. I wanted something that when wrapped with Baco 9# paper would fit nicely in unresized fired Jamison cases but still fit in the bore easily when fouled so I was shooting for a wrapped .444 base and a wrapped .436 portion that rides in the bore with a little wiggle room. I cast just a couple with some wrinkles to see how they fit in a fired case and they were snug near the top of the neck and slightly loose when pushed down halfway in the neck so they might be a tiny bit undersized, but getting it perfect is a luck of the draw. I think it should work. I was casting 50:1 but might try 30:1 to see if the diameter gets a smidge larger. It will be a couple weeks before I can make up some loads and try them out. Hopefully I didn't waste $125 (approx) but I sure like Toms service and for the money it is a blast to be able to create something unique. Hopefully it will shoot good enough for my general hunting needs (2" at 100). I'm not expecting super accuracy. Hope it works well on the moose. Mike RE: New 44-77 PP Mold - Mike - 06-12-2015 Mike, That looks like it will work. A similar bullet that I designed is Accurate's 44-400P, which tapers from .432 to .437. I use it over 75 grains of Olde Eynsford 1 1/2 in my .44/77. So, when you get your loads figured out how about giving us a full report, complete with moose pictures. Shoot sharp, Mike RE: New 44-77 PP Mold - bruce moulds - 06-12-2015 mike, a good concept if you have a greaser chamber. far better than sizing hell out of your brass. dual diameter bullets work well in this application, as they do not have to bump up unnecessarily to fill the chamber. they are already bumped up! your bullet looks like a good hunting one. once you learn how to patch dual diameter bullets, it is no harder than straight ones. never overlook 30/1 alloy for hunting bullets. the fact that you bullet is a little looser in the neck can be a good thing when seating the bullet, as patch damage is minimized. I shoot a 40 cal long range pp bullet with dual diameters and it has turned out to be an experiment worth the time and money. good luck. keep safe, bruce. RE: New 44-77 PP Mold - Denali - 06-13-2015 Thanks Mike and Bruce. It's actually a PP chamber with a 7 deg leade but the fired neck will hold a .444 bullet so it is a little larger than one that would hold a true "bore" diameter bullet. I was nervous about the dual diameter with tapered midsection being wrapped with paper, but it is so gradual you can't tell it's there when you do a quick look at the bullet and you dont even notice it wrapping the bullet either! I was surprised! RE: New 44-77 PP Mold - Denali - 06-25-2015 Yesterday I had mixed results with KIK 2F at 75 and 77 grains. Today with my "seconds" bullets (wrinkles on them) I tried 75 gr KIK 1 1/2F, Swiss 1 1/2F, and Goex 1F using two three shot groups each from clean olive oiled barrel for each group simulating gun conditions in the field when hunting. Fired the three shots quickly. Swiss 1.5F averaged 1.5" KIK 1.5F averaged 1.9" Goex 1F averaged 2.4" winds variable 5-10 100 yards I think Swiss 1.5F will be the powder of choice. It works best in my other two sharps also. RE: New 44-77 PP Mold - Don McDowell - 06-25-2015 You might want to wrap that in 8 lb paper. Use a dry lubed felt wad and a napa rubber cork wad under it, and wipe the exposed portion of the patch with jojoba oil. Jump that kik charge to 80 grs. RE: New 44-77 PP Mold - bruce moulds - 06-26-2015 mike, there are two times when not using the best bullets possible loaded in the best ammunition is doing yourself a disservice. one is working up a load. the other is for sighters in a mid and long range target match. don, I am about to try tallow wiped on patches. it seems to have a higher melting point than jojoba and not destroy the integrity of the patch as much. rubbed on the surface it seems to soak in a little overnight. pretty cool here at the moment, so will be interesting to see how summer compares. wads need experimentation, as sometimes a thin hard one will give better bullet bumpup. keep safe, bruce. RE: New 44-77 PP Mold - Denali - 06-26-2015 Don and Bruce, Thanks for the advice. Yes there is a lot more testing to do. I will cast up some more 30:1 (they fit as good as it gets in twice fired unretouched brass thank goodness). I'm using a traditional 3/16 lube cookie between wads under the bullet. I want to keep the load "traditional" but am willing to experiment to find a cleaner load with less fouling and good accuracy. I used up my good bullets the first day with 2F KIK, hence the seconds the next day. I will cast up some better ones and give it a go with higher charges Don. Again, thanks for the advice! Since I've reached the "good enough for hunting" accuracy level I can slow down and fine tune things knowing I didn't waste my money on this mold. Take care. Mike RE: New 44-77 PP Mold - Don McDowell - 06-26-2015 Denali, the load I worked up for the original sharps dual diameter bullet shoots well enough to take to a match (been to the nationals twice) and will also shoot a long string with out having to wipe. RE: New 44-77 PP Mold - Denali - 06-26-2015 Ok Don. I will have to try it. Do you compress the 1.5 to the base of the neck? I haven't tried 80 grain with concern that I might bulge the cases but again, haven't tried. I'll have to get some napa stuff from Napa Auto parts I presume? I think I might have some felt wads. I also might try a batch of 50:1 again. I'm looking for some positive expansion. |
