cheek weld - Old Jim - 07-24-2015

How important is cheek weld, mostly for long-range target shooting?

Some butt-stocks are made with a rather mild comb area and some folks don't get a firm contact while shooting the longer-distanced target.

Are some shooters doing well without a firm contact on the rifle comb?

Old minds are curious,

I learned that as "stockweld" and consider it very important. For long range shooting, with the sight jacked up rather high, stockweld in harder to maintain but I do try to have some contact with the stock again my cheek or chin which is repeated as close as possible, shot for shot. Shoot sharp, Mike

Jim, To answer your first question I need to be buttoned down solid on the stock; buttplate tight on shoulder, face solid on cheekpiece, solid hold on pistol grip. If I don't have all these working for me, I shoot patterns instead of groups. I need the same solid connections for shooting decently w/ shotguns, too; swing the shotgun from the waist.

I don't know about your 2nd question, but there very well may be some.

Regards

Jim.
Cheek weld is important, but controlling the torque, keeping the rifle from twisting is more important. You can have no contact with the comb of the stock and still hit with the tang sights. If you don't pull the butplate into your pocket and keep the rifle from twisting you will shoot patterns like IR said.
Cheek weld really comes into play using a scope more so then the tang sights, especially if you don't have the parallax adjusted properly.

Cheek weld will kill your scores if it's not consistant.
I don't know of anybody that can shoot well with out a consistant contact with the stock.
You see a lot of strap on comb risers and check pieces on rifles on the line at Creedmoor matches.

All the MORE REASON to not buy rifles with traditional low comb stocks! Stay with the Shiloh LRE or the Sporter #1 which have higher combs!

The addition of a comb pad works well also!

Rich's rifles look right at home with the add-on comb risers.

Same for the Hartford pistol grip stock from C. Sharps Arms, nicely made with a high comb. That stock isn't in the catalog but those rifles can be seen on their "in stock" listing.
