40-65 and OE - Don McDowell - 09-13-2015
We fell into a deal on a CPA 40-65. Sooo, I had a few cases left from the last go round. The Lyman snover is the only bullet I have on hand that the nose would fit into the bore.
So armed with 50 freshly cast from 18-1, lubed with BSC I dropped 58 grs of Olde E 2 f and a .030 walters wad into the starline cases, primed with RP 9.5 primer, seated the bullet to just one lube groove exposed.
This is supposed to be Carol's rifle, so we sat her down and after the first 3 rounds had enough elevation on the sight to catch the gong at 200 meters. And she just kept catching that gong , just making the splatter a bit bigger and more evident....
I also had 5 rounds loaded with 60 grs of the same powder, so it was my turn, those rounds shot alright, but not as well as the 58 grs.
So for those that have been curious about OE and the 40-65, I'm thinking 58 grs is going to be a pretty good place to start, working up or down as the target tells you.

Hey Ranch, After that good report I might start using OE 2F in my .40/70 SS. At least I'll try it. Maybe it will be an improvement over the OE 1 1/2F I've been trying. And I'm mainly using the 370 grain Saeco bullet. Shoot sharp, Mike

This is compressing about .3, and that seems to be what the OE likes so well. Need to do more testing to be sure, but dang this does look promising. Came home from Utah with a BACO mould certificate, and have been looking real serious at their 395 gr creedmoor bullet.

Don't know which one yet. First thing I need to do is call them and see what the nose diameter is. I have the RCBS CSA 400 bullet, but the nose won't fit the bore on this Kreiger barrel.

Dangerous Don, Do you have other uses for that 400 grain CSA bullet or will you sell the mold? That one could interest me, for use in my CSA Highwall. Shoot sharp, Mike

Right now that mould is out on loan, I do have a goodly number of bullets cast up, I could send you when I get back from the nationals if you wanted to try some.

Don, I'd like that. Just 10 of them for a trial run would do me well. I already have the Snover and the "other" RCBS 400 grainer in addition to a Lyman 385 grain and the Saeco 370 grain so I do have plenty of things to shoot. Good luck at the Nationals. Shoot sharp, Mike
