Making Tallow - Kurt - 10-03-2015
The forums have been quiet lately so I will start a thread on Tallow, Buffalo tallow.
This young meat bull I just got really was covered with good hard fat inside and out. Buffalo fat is more of a yellow fat compared to mutton or Deer but it is a good hard fat that is really slick after you run it through a grinder so you get the most fat from what you cook out. If you pick up a screw driver by the slanted blade it will slip out like STP or motor honey.
I have a 3 gallon pot cooking under low heat and when I turn it off before going to bead I should have a nice first cake to be put aside till I get the rest of the ground fat worked up into cakes to be cooked again to get a good hard dry tallow. It sure makes good bullet lube and candles if that's what you want to use it fore.

Kurt, I enjoy making candles with beeswax and I'd like to try pouring a few with buffalo tallow. At the next Quigley I'll have some beeswax candles with me, might even offer half a dozen or so as a prize for the drawing awards. Shoot sharp, Mike

B-wax candles burn cleaner then the tallow.

Kurt, Yes, and it is reported that in the "old days" beeswax candles sold for more $$$ than tallow candles because they smelled better. At this time I must admit that I don't know what a burning tallow candle smells like... And a lot of our "natural" bullet lubes today are scented. Shoot sharp, Mike

beeswax candles do not soot as do other candles and they are theraputic when they burn. I like them ,

Congrats on your Buffalo tallow!
I'm wondering how it would work in place of Sheep tallow in bullet lubes... I have a dead ringer for SPG that uses Sheep tallow.
