We Shot the Sausage - Dave Roelle - 12-07-2015
Jack O'connor wrote an story of a hunt in the Sonora area of Old Mexico----"We Shot the Tamales"----Well we "shot the sausages" last weekend.
Pretty weather and the Whitetail Rut in high gear so we headed to the ranch for a weekend. #37 degree's Saturday morning with a light frost and bucks out walking, had several nice ones 8"s and !0's at a favorite blind---this spike showed up so i limbered up the new Shiloh riflegun and put him in the cooler, at the shot he bolted a few yards and piled up, We eliminate all the spikes and inferior bucks letting the really pretty ones grow toward old age and with luck real trophies.

Paper Patch 45-70 470 grain hollow point in front of 80 grains of Swiss 1 1/2----------complete pass through of course with significant expansion witnessed by the exit-------------The new rifle REALLY PERFORMS WELL !!!! THANKS LUCINDA ----range was about 100 yards

Then morning warmed up to light jacket weather so we went on a safari style ride, checking fence and feed------this porker made the mistake of showing up in open of a 50 acre feild--------one 45-70 DRT at about 150 yards

driving around a bit more and we had a fun upclose encounter with a pretty 10 point--------hope you can see the video
In all a really fun hunt--------next trip perhaps we will collect a pretty Buck------------that is if the kids let us

Dave it sure looks like you got that purdy Shiloh gun working well
Those young spikes are better eating anyway. Sausage, jerky, or on the grill.
Sometimes the deer are so curious and dumb. I have had them come right up to me sitting on a bucket leaning on a tree within less then ten feet. I could have put him down with my KaBar he was so close trying to figure out what was leaning on the tree till I had to blink my eyes

Hi Kurt------------thats the most fun isn't it, getting close, its common on this ranch to drive up to the critters in the camo-golf cart and have a chat with them
-----its much harder to find spikes and inferior deer critters than it is pretty 8's and 10's !!!!!!!Then new Shiloh is holding a MOA at 100 yards fire forming brass
The 10 in the video was eatin about 30 feet in front of me and trotted by the cart at about 10 feet
The weather is supposed to be nice all week, i'll head back this evening and shine up the bucket on the tractor fixing up some wash-outs that need tending to.
Maybe call up a coyote to play with

I had a nice one in my yard a few days ago before season about a 2-1/2 year old that had a nice crown on his head and a small 6 pt. chasing does till big daddy showed up.
Yes I do enjoy having them come up to me, so close some times I can see the fine nasal hairs moving when the inhale and exhale and watch their reaction when I smack my lips LOL Some day they will pin me to the tree when I do this. LOL
I like still hunting or from a ground blind. I don't much care for tree stands but there fun when you drop an arrow by hand on their hinder on one that is still with it's Mother to wise them up a little

Yup Kurt playin with the critters is the most fun for sure
One time I had a bunch of javelina under an elevated blind--I'd carte a few big rock's up and bomb them under the blind. GREAT FUN !!!!!!

I'm trying to get the quickest possible killing shot-----if you can see the thicket behind the deer in the video, these thickets cover hundreds of acres, deer run through them----people can't hardly crawl through them. The quicker i can anchor the critter the more sure i am of recovery----so far its working just fine, 5 hogs and 2 deer have fallen to this bullet, the most any traveled was 20 yards.
All of the bullets so far have been complete pass thru's so i have no recovered slugs to see the physical performance of the bullet-----------i'm happy with the results

I am glad someone did ask this question as I was curious also. I live in PA and have shot 2 whit tails with a 45-70. The first one was with a hand loaded 300 gr Sierra hollow point but it wasn't loaded up hot and I hit the deer just above the shoulder blade and took out the spine. Not much damage or meat loss. Damaged/bloodshot area about the size of a large Lemon. The second was hit in the hind quarter with a 350 gr soft point out of a Bolt action loaded up to about 2000 fps according to the book. That load did do a lot of damage, I lost all the steaks on that side.
I was a little surprised to see how much damage those PPB's did. It would be nice to see a recovered bullet if you ever get lucky enough to find one. I do understand why you want to drop the animals as fast as possible. No one wants to try to track an animal through any kind of overgrown thicket and especially one that has plants that like to grab ahold of you, tear your clothes, and scrape your skin off in very small very painful strips.
Sounds like your well on your way to creating some very fond memories as well as hunting stories that both you and your family will be repeating for a long time.

Hi Sam:
The thickets in this part of Texas are just nasty-----with the hogs ever present its important to me to carry a large caliber handgun if you do have to crawl in on a recovery----i use my !911---ya just can't maneuver a Rifle in the thickets especially a 30 inch Barreled Sharps .
The kids all enjoy hunting and exploring outdoors and yup it makes for great times
