Knock me over with a feather! - Kurt - 12-15-2015
Carolyn and I have been married for 50 years. Over these 50 years I always hoped that she would pick up a rifle or hand gun and come out and shoot with me. She has shot my .222 Remington a couple times and I have watched her pick off horse flies and small moths off the 200 yard target backer with the .222 but never wanted to shoot a rifle or hand gun. I cant remember her ever holding one.
A couple days ago she asked me out of the clear blue sky; do you have a pistol I can shoot??????????? WOW.
I went down to the safe and brought up a arm full
to see what will fit her small short fingered hand. All of the revolvers have the N frame. No go with those . cant reach the trigger right. The Match pistols like the 52 S&W Master has a big grip also the .22 THE VICTOR has large target stocks. The Judge and the 1911 gold cup sort of will work but she just gets the tip of the finger on the trigger. The Judge was the best fit but I said the .45 Colt it shoots will give you a good push, but she said well lets see. So out the door we went and I had a target up so I had her shoot it. Well the recoil made her step back one step. I said ok that it lets go to the gun shop and see what they have that fits your hand in the morning.
Got to the shop and thay had a bunch of hand guns, belly guns to the long .450 Alaskan
I must say the man behind the counter was very patient with Carol. I stayed out of it mostly. I wanted her to get what is a comfortable fit for her and caliber. After more then a hour of handling them she settled on the Ruger SR-9-C I even like the little shooter. Well it's a 72 hour wait to take it home but it was OK. The morning we picked it up it was raining but Carol said we are stopping at the range and shoot! OK? I said yup. I picked up 200 rounds of 9MM before we left the shop. Carol said do we need that many? I said yes, it's a automatic.
Well I worked with her for some time on hold and answering questions. I put up a target close about 10 yards or so and I stressed again, don't lock your the thumb of the off hand over your hand so the slide don't cut your thumb. I said this when I was working with her on holds. Well she pushed the mag in and re least the slide and I turned to look at the target to see the hit BANG....YELL...But she didn't drop it
sure enough the slide hit her thumb where I told her not to put it. No band aids so I found a napkin and masking tape and fixed the blood leak Well she shot 60 rounds and when she shot the last 10 they where in a very tight group.
I'm proud of her.
I shot a few from a post support to see what that little short stubby barrel can do. I must say that I'm impressed with the accuracy that little belly gun has. I moved the target out farther and I put 3 shots in a small hole I could nut stick my finger through with out making it bigger. That little 9MM is a fine shooter. But it sure eats the ammo

Was it curiosity, or something purposeful that changed things ?
My Becky has her 9 shot 22 that she shoots very well, its her "house gun" when i'm not around.
I have always thought an original PPK would be fun

It was fun, Rain and all.
No not curiosity, She really wants to do this. Today she asked me if I had a .22 rifle light enough that does not have a long stock. The only .22 I have is a low wall but she was gone with her Mother all day so I didn't get it out. I told her that CPA can make what she wants.
A .22 PPK would make a fine shooter. I have a High Standard "THE Victor" but it has the large target stocks on it and I don't have the Military Stocks anymore. I looked for them today but I don't know what happen to them.
If she stays with this I will look for a K frame S&W or maybe a cobra. The slide in this Ruger is a little hard for her to work with. I could take a wrap off the springs to looses it a little but that is not the best thing to do. It might lighten up with use a little.

Interesting Kurt------------shooting is FUN !!!!!! kinda like the kids computer games now, you get immediate feedback !!!!!!all of our talk and experimentation gets in the way of FUN sometimes----make it fun and you'll have a fine shooting partner
A CPA in one of the lighter original Sharps calibers would be a fun gun !!!!!
Swap barrels, swap stocks till a match is found would be fun for sure

That story is really familiar. About a week before Obama was inaugurated the 1st time, I was doing something on the computer after Sunday church, and in she comes w/ "that look" on her face. Right away I could see this was serious, and she announced, "I want to own my own pistol, be competitive, go to matches, and I want to shoot good, and be able protect myself if you're not here!"
Serious for sure and for certain so I told her to get her coat, and we'll go shopping. Down to Scheels Sports, and we end up w/ a Ruger semi-auto .22 rimfire, and it's been full throttle ever since. Now she is an NRA certified pistol instructor, and teaches bullseye pistol techniques w/ .22 rimfire and .45 ACP. We have targets all over the house that have the 10 and X rings shot out w/ her .45. She also wanted to reload her own ammo (a surprise to me) so I made room for her in the gun room, got her set-up. Now she loads all her own .45 ACP loads, and cleans all her own guns at age 74. What a joy to me to have her into the shooting sports even though she has no interest in the black powder arena.
This was all a surprise to me, but when the Spirit moves there's no holding these gals back.

Kurt did that little tongue sticking out of the trigger bother her finger? Carol said after a couple of magazines full it was digging into her trigger finger. I tried it and sho nuff about the time the second mag ran dry I could feel it digging in. But then on the other hand that's not
really a more than one mag gun....

No Don Carol never mentioned it. I shot a bunch of rounds today. Some 115gr and some 148 gr. Maybe between 60 and 70 and I never paid attention to the trigger safety. I could tell it was there and the trigger felt more like a two stage trigger and it sort of broke like a two stage and not a hard break like some of the hand guns I have handled. guessing it feels like a 4 pound pull.
My Judge has a lot heavier break then this sr 9.
