Reloading the .22 rimfire is it coming back? - Kurt - 01-02-2016 It was in the past, is it coming back? In the past you could buy empty primed .22 rimfire cases. A few company's sold reloading dies, Herter's, C&H used to make dies as well as CH4D the last die maker that I know of. I still have a couple thousand primed .22 cases and every now and then I will load some black powder .22 rounds and they are as accurate shooters as some of the top end match ammo made. Below are 5 shot groups with black 50 yard target I compared with some Wolf Match. Surprising the black powder loads shot better with out fouling control, just load and shoot. No it's not a new option like the title below, it's old knowledge revised. Kurt http://www.ssusa.org/articles/2015/8/18/reloading-22-long-rifle-a-new-option-for-competitors/ ![]() ![]()
RE: Reloading the .22 rimfire is it coming back? - Hiwall55 - 01-03-2016 Kurt, did you cast them little pills or buy them swaged? Not quite sure I could load them but the guys a some ranges I shoot at would get a KICK out of this. RE: Reloading the .22 rimfire is it coming back? - kokomokid - 01-03-2016 Kurt, are you using any lube or bullet coating? RE: Reloading the .22 rimfire is it coming back? - Gussy - 01-03-2016 Which is easier to find, loaded shells or primed cases?? Lots of target stuff out there now. I'm still thinking about an HMR? RE: Reloading the .22 rimfire is it coming back? - Kurt - 01-03-2016 Gussy right now it's easer to get the loaded .22's ![]() In the past you could buy primed .22 cases and load to your specks. This was common when the long range silhouette .22 matches started before the .22 mags came about. A few years ago John Kort and Johnboy had a thread going about pulling the .22's and loading them using black powder. I jumpen in and told them just get some of the Amcor primed cases from this site. big mistake I should have ordered a case first before telling them. They got the last of what was left on the market and no more coming. But that is fine I still have a 1/2 3# coffee can full that will last me. I used mine for indoor hand gun practice shooting wax bullets in the basement. Highwall. I cast them. I still have a mould. I have a swage die that I also swage a hollow point cavity in the cast bullets if I want. They do improve the accuracy in the .22's. KoKo. I lube them using Vaseline and a little graphite mixed in the lube I rub on the bullets. It's a little messy but so are the RWS shells. You don't need much for these little .22's. I never have figured out why you can shoot a .22 forever between cleaning and the same lube won't work on bigger stuff. Near the same speed too. RE: Reloading the .22 rimfire is it coming back? - Kurt - 01-04-2016 Gussy I pretty much changed over to 50/50 Vaseline and Ozokerite or Soy wax. Now that I have a good supply of Buff tallow again I soften it with Vaseline. When I shoot a bore rider I coat the nose with this lube. and I have no problem shooting several shots and a blow now and then down the barrel. This works very good using the 121 parkerhale bullet in the .45-70. I think shooting the .22 it just don't build up the heat like the big bore does. The .22 also stays below 1000 fps with a 4 gr load of 3F. |
