NO PRIMERS? - alfajim - 03-05-2016

Does anyone know or have an answer about the almost total lack of availability of primers for using in any of the cases we use?

Midway is the only supplier showing any of the large or large magnum primers.
All Federal brands show on backorder and not available for backorder. Brownells also.
Buffalo Arms and Track of The Wolf do not show any primers available at all no listings, blank spot on page.
So as of now only Winchester WLR and WLRM on limited availability, Federal none at all and CCI 210 only no 215 to be had!

Over the years, I have tried F210 and 210M primers in the 45-70 and 45-90 and found they worked just fine. The powder used is Swiss 1.5 and OE, in various grades.

I don't think I have ever tried CCI 210 primers. Many times I have found reloading components at Graf & Sons, Mexico, MO.

YMMV,

YMMV,

Just checked and right now Graf & Sons have CCI and Winchester rifle primers in stock.

Sort of on topic right now Amazon has Winchester 45-70 brass in stock in 50 item lots for $41.78 plus shipping total of $52.00. Also Starline in 50 or 100 lots $28 for 50 $52 for 100, and Hornady 50 item box for $49. Just got one of the Winchester. Only other supplier I have found today is Graf and Sons for Winchester in stock all other out on back order Brownells list not avalible for backorder.

Here in Middle right of US of A (Ohio, site of NRA Nationals Camp Perry) there exist a lot of NRA High Power clubs and aficionados that are stoking up for this summer's shootin season. Typically good primers and components supplies get a little scarce now and then. Been there and done that but now have seen the light in making big rounds from scratch. In fact hand crafting complete rounds for BPCR use is my main goal. It's funny that Primer preference (I.E. Fed 215M for my 45-70) and quality level sought are much the same. I witnessed Cabela's has foreign primers but they are no solution as far as this pilgram am concerned.

I just took a look at Midway's site, they seem to have a good variety of primers in stock including BR-2's.

Stopped at RedRock in Miles a couple days ago. They had about everything but the Federal Rifle series. Chose a brick of CCI 250s this time.

Running low on primers myself so this thread prompted a trip to the local gun shop. Settled on CCI BR2's the last couple of years so priced them at $105 AUD. ...that's about $73 US . My last box...about six months ago was $90 AUD which was about $59US at the time. Beggars can't be choosers though. I better get another 1000 before they run out again and they add another 10 % to the next shipment..Sad Someones making good money but it isn't me. At least there are some at the shop ... it was touch and go a few years back. Fed LR match seem a pretty good primer too and substantially less expensive at about $76 AU ( or $52 US ) .
