Hornady 45-70 brass - Don McDowell - 04-06-2016
We've probably all read the internet wisdom about 45-70 brass from Hornady being to short. Well the stuff they use to load the leverlution ammo, might very well be.
But I decided to take the chance and order some of their component brass.
Well folks fear no more that stuff measures 2.1 inches.
So now I need to get busy and cast some more 45 caliber bullets, I feel another medal from the nationals coming on.

Don, what is the weight of the case and what does it measure at the mouth? Want to see how it compares to Winchester. A lot of Winchester can go as long as 2.105 and this length works best with paper patched bullets in my Shiloh. Really like my supply of old stock Winchester as that will go 2.110 or a bit more.

Eric I'll have to get back to you on the weight of these cases. I think I'll grab up another 150 of them and get to work with them in the Browning. I like to have each rifle with it's own brand of brass.

Don, how does it on capacity wise internally to the other brands mainly Winchester? I was looking at the Hornady when I was getting brass from Amazon nut as it is the most expensive of the three and tghey still had Winchester I went ahead and got 50 more so I now have 100 Winchester and 50 Starline. After reading about Winchester discontinuing their brass went back to Amazon to see if they had more Win. and they did but it was almost $12 more for the next 50, $43 Versis $55. The Starline was only $23 for 50 great deal.
Amazon might still have Win. brass for those needing some?

Jim I don't know about the capacity and such as yet. Just opened the box and measured it for length. I'm not much of a fan of Starline brass, but there are many who do like the stuff..

Over a year ago I bought a batch of once-fired .45/70 brass that turned out to be Hornady. Good lookin' stuff, for sure. But my RCBS seating die wouldn't crimp it because that brass was too short. I passed it on to another shooter who uses only Hornady brass. Shoot sharp, Mike

Yeh stay away from the once fired brass, it's for their gummy tipped bullets and for what ever reason they have to trim that brass short.
This component brass is a full 2.1, and I can only imagine that it may grow with firing. We'll know more about it soon I hope.

Hey Ranch, I think the cases are shorter on the Hornady loaded .45/70s because of the longer ogive to their pointed bullets. Shoot sharp, Mike

Little more info on the Hornady brass, they weigh 185 grs. +- .5 gr. This is about 20 grs. heavier than the unfired WW I have on hand, and the WW varied as much as 1+ gr
Hornady case mouth was .010, a bit thinner than the WW, and again more uniform.
Both cases hold 70 grs. of OE 2f with room to spare , by just dumping the powder thru the funnel.
