Miserable range conditions today. Dark, Breezy from the SE, snow and cold but I needed to get some time in with my Shiloh #1 in 45 90. Posted the SR @ 200 and used a Dirty Bird for the center. (easy to spot shots). I used Starline neck sized brass, CCI BR2 primer, 83.5 grains of OE 1.5 with a .060 poly wad and seated a BACO 535 grain 16/1 (actual@ 527 grains) to the bottom of the first band. A little thumb pressure to fully seat. Wiped between shots, 1 damp and 1 dry. 20 shots into 4.5 X 4.75 with 10 rounds into a 2 X 2 Throw out 3 shots and 17 rounds went 3.5 X 3.5. Not too bad for the conditions. I have Distant Thunder sights, front and rear and they are really nice to work with. This gun will really shoot! Getting tuned up for the Lodi Creedmoor in May. Bad conditions on the range still beats a good day at work!!

I did make some changes to the previous load. 83.5 grains instead of 81 grains of OE 1.5. CCI BR primer substituted for the Federal match pistol primer with the under primer card. With this batch of bullets I used a certified 16-1 alloy and they came into the same weight range as my mixed alloy but just a whisker larger on the .450 chamber alignment band so I had to seat to the bottom of the first band rather than leaving the top grease groove exposed. Still as cast and pan lubed with DGL. I think there was a slight improvement in group size and will use this again. A bit more powder and a little more compression so these are getting moving a little faster. I'll shoot this load again to verify. Not too bad for the range conditions!

When they chrono'ld my 45-90 for the Creedmoor at Raton last year, that 81 gr load was doing 1340..

when you guys say 45/90, do we assume you refer to the sharps 45/90/2 7/8, or the Winchester 45/90/2.4?

Thank's Don that is good info to know. I'll get a chance to run my loads over the chronograph later when the sun is at a better angle to pick up the bullets. A friend wants to work drop charts for me and needs that kind of data to plug into his program. Could be fun to see what happens with velocity between the 45-70 and 45-90 using the same bullet just at different speeds.

I was surprised that the 90 was doing a 100 fps more with 12 grs. more powder.
When OE first came out I was getting 1225 from a 28 inch 45-70

Bruce, The cartridge referred to is the 2.4" straight. Loaded with 75 to 85 grains of powder using a grease groove bullet and up to 100 grains of powder with a bore size paper patch bullet.
