40 70 SS loads - ken s - 08-12-2016

I'd like to reopen this thread.Old thread talked about the guns, not the loads....
I'm starting to load for my original 40 70 SS and would like some ideas. bore is very good, all rifling still there and somewhat sharp.
New chamber sleeve just finished by gunsmith, bore untouched.

I'm trying. a custom .397 Brooks base pour, 1 in 20, with a PP wrap of .006, that brings the bullet to .403. The original size.
JEB Brass for original guns.

65 grains Swss 1 1/2, a .006 wad, and some light compression.
It shoots 3 inches at 50 yards...MAG primers.

how much do you compress Swiss?
SPG cookies seem not to work, do you use them?
I put TWO newspaper wads under the bullet to prevent the wad from sticking to the bullet. (this works with every other caliber)
Do you put the grease cookie under the bullet and over the wad, or
under the wad with a second wax paper wad between the cookie and powder? And what primers. MAG or REG lg rifle?
Thanks...Ken

Thanks powder-burner....I saw a 'movie' and it showed the use of a flexable fiberglass rod pushing one wet patch through the bore after each shot. bought one...
65 1 1/2 Swiss, mag prime, no lube disc, 060 wad, very little compress. 330 Brooks, patched.403 total....
TWO INCH GROUP AT 50 YARDS. ok,,,no long distance yet, but the old girl now has showed promise.... some slight sight adjustment and I'll be back out tomorrow....
thanks..Ken

Go to a regular primer and up the charge to 70 gr.
