Yep-freshwater drum commonly called a perch here on the Mississippi River .if you split the head open there are 2 stones right behind the eyes and one will have a L on it,it's called a lucky stone( obviously not for the perch) On that size fish it will be about the size of a dime , my Gramps had some he always carried on him that were the size of a half dollar.
No biologist just commercial fisherman

Thanks Bill. I didn't cut their heads open, but I do recall when making the cut behind the gills to filet them, there was a bone or something on that left side, not on the right.
Will see what they are for eating quality tonite..

This part of the woods we call them sheep heads. They are a little on the oily side but if you throw them in the pan as soon as you can they are good enough to chase the hunger pains away Smile They get on the mushy side if kept to long in the fridge after you filet them.

The meat sure is a solid white, sort of like cod or pike.

Yep, it looks like a drum to me, too.

Make sure you clean out the mud vain when you clean that big flathead. I like the 3 to 5 pound blue cats. Tongue

Here you go Don. You will catch those darned sheep heads around here more then cats or bluegills. But they are fun to hook.

Next year I will do something a little different when I get done shooting. I will find a place to stow the fishing gear and maybe find a way to carry a canoe or a inflatable boat. I get around some very nice streams when I'm in the National Forests.
