Lyman Mag 25 - Don McDowell - 01-26-2017
Was going to work on some alloy from chilled shot and tin, problem was the old Lee 20 lb pot went to spitting lead out the bottom of the pot again. Emptied it up and after it cooled it's now waiting in the dumpster for a ride to town.... Anyway went to searching for a new pot, and Midway had this new Lyman with the built in PID on sale, it was still close enough to my birthday, that birthday pricing still applied. This all happened on Tuesday, this afternoon UPS brought the box full of goodies...
So hopefully tomorrow I will get to report on how this new pot works.

First impression is I'm not exceptionally thrilled with the ergonomics of this unit. I think with time I can get used to it. It's a bit chilly here today to do much with it, but it seems that the built in PID and my plain ol lead thermometer don't agree. Maybe with a bit more warm up time and a little better ambient temp than 32 they may come closer, but right now it takes about 15 degree's more on the PID to get to the temp I like to cast according to the thermometer.
Will have to see what happens when this global warming subsides a bit.

Congrats Don in the updated technology. Not to worry if that PID has slightly different opinion to your trusty temperature gauge. When in doubt trust you tried and true temp reader and just move the setting on controller to whatever bias necessary hold the Galina at the pouring temperature you know yields the proper casts. The new unit will/ should hold your desired temp all the way to bottom of the pot. This better than monitoring reading and breaking the casting rhythm to hand turn knobs etc. Best of luck with your 25 pounder. Hmmm that sounds like Don has new caliber too ;-)
