Picked up a nice roller,44/70, Green Mountain barrel with 17" centers for my scope, sizing die cut with the same reamer that cut the chamber,60 pieces of brass.built by John King. Now I need to know what size wads to get, I'm thinking .450 but would like to know for sure from some of you .44 shooters.

Grove dia on a GM barrel should be .446. I would guess that anything from about .448 to .450 would work just fine.
Just curious tho, is it a PP chamber or is it cut for GG and what is the parent case?

Is this a .44-70 Maynard chamber? That is a great caliber if it is.
If that chamber has a tight case neck using the chamber reamer for a sizing die is not ideal for use on new unfired brass even if it is annealed because the brass will spring back a little making chambering hard as well as extracting the fired cases once you get the round chambered for a few loadings. I went through this with one of my rifles using a chamber reamer for the sizing die. When I order a die for a tight chamber I also get a matching reamer with a smaller diameter made so this problem does not happen. But once the brass has been fired a few times the chamber reamer die will work great.
One thing in your favor is your roller it will came a round in but you might need your rod to get the fired case back out for a couple shots.

I remember runnin' across't an old geezer @ the Quigley years ago that packed a 2# rock along to help chamber his stuborn loads in an old roller he loved to use. I never had that problem
!I load bullets where they engrave the leade about 30 thousands in my roller, using the block to cam that last little bit.

Just getting out of the sticks down here South of Troy.
Kurt I don't think it's a Maynard because the brass is made from 45/70 and trimmed to 2.1
Sam it comes with a BACO money mould that is .446 and 500 grains and it's a greaser . Barrel is 1 in 18!twist
The silly wet shoot was real hard the winds were switchyand I shot a 15 but high score was a 17 , so I don't feel too bad.
I ordered some wads at .451 so I hope that works out.

Kelley O Roos shot a 44-70 Maynard based on the .45-70 case and he was tough to beat with that rifle. This silhouette rifle I'm working on now was a tough diction between the .44-70 Maynard and the .40-65.
I was coming down to Effingham next weekend for the first match of the season but things got in the way again.
