New scope? - Steve Anderson - 04-01-2017 I received a new scope from MVA and today is the first chance I had to go shoot it. Eventually I got it on paper to discover that even on the lowest setting I hit 6" high at 100 yards. The scope is sitting on a Shiloh Creedmoor model and apparently the barrel taper is the cause of my high hits. Anyone care to S.W.A.G. how much of a shim I need on the front base? Thanks, Steve. RE: New scope? - Don McDowell - 04-01-2017 What is the height of the rear base? RE: New scope? - Steve Anderson - 04-01-2017 I have no idea Don, whatever they ship as standard? RE: New scope? - Don McDowell - 04-01-2017 What you might try is setting the gun so the bore is level and then using a level board measure the difference between the front and rear base? But probably your best bet would be to call up there Monday and see what JC suggests for a different height front base. I know they make 2 or three different heights of rear bases, but not sure about the fronts. RE: New scope? - Steve Anderson - 04-01-2017 That's my plan I guess. Till then I think I'll shim the front, try a few rounds and switch the scope over to the Stevens for next weekend at Carpenter. RE: New scope? - Don McDowell - 04-01-2017 You'll probably need about .060 shim under that front base, maybe a touch more. Using the .010 = 1 moa. Don't know if I'll shoot iron or scope next week. I am planning on shooting Hunter class irons bpcr the following saturday. RE: New scope? - Dan Cash - 04-02-2017 Why is it necessary to have the rifle zero at 100 yards? Gong matches nor NRA Silhouette don't have 100 yard targets. You don't say what caliber you are shooting but you may be close to zero at 200 or 250 which could be beneficial, considering the relatively limited elevation capability of the period scope mounts. RE: New scope? - Don McDowell - 04-02-2017 Dan I suspect he's planning on hunting with this rifle, along with the bpcr silhouette and , the gong match he hosts at his place in August. RE: New scope? - Steve Anderson - 04-02-2017 Apparently I'm challenged more than usual this morning. I replied but didn't hit the go button maybe. What I said was; Thanks guys, appreciate the swag and thoughts. What I don't want is to try and holding under the chickens. Holding on them is hard enough. Dan you're ever so right, for silhouette and most dinger shoots who needs a 100 yard setting? However, I'd like to be able to shoot from arms length to the next zip code. Don is correct, I'd like to be able to hunt with this setup. For now I may just shoot and worry about groups and not where the group is at. Dan we met at the Q in 2014 I believe it was, last night I ran across a picture of you at the Q and it's pretty good. Not pretty, but pretty good. Anyway, PM me your email address and I'll look it up and send it to you. Again, thanks guys, Steve. Since you asked Dan, I'm shooting a 45-70. I ordered the Creedmoor mount and with it have well over 200 MOA and elevation. With the numbered adjustment knobs it's a bit cumbersome but hopefully I'll like being able to reach out and touch steel. RE: New scope? - Martini2 - 04-02-2017 For a guesstamate you'll have to furnish the length of scope or actually the distance between scope mounts. The 0.010" = 1 Minute only applies if the pivot points (mounting) are 36 inches apart. Mounting blocks are usually sold in increments of thickness so you should be in good shape shortly. Aim small of course, heard that helps. |
