Wiping technique - Randy Bohannon - 04-07-2017
I recently purchased a Brooks 40 cal. "Money Bullet" type mold with the reduced front driving bands. I have had dismal accuracy in my Shiloh 40-70 SS. I was using a blow tube and with that chambering subsequent rounds was near impossible.Pretty sure I need to be wiping the bore after every shot with this bullet.
My question is what technique is typical for those who wipe after the shot is taken, with damp patches on a brush or jag followed by dry patch ? What has proven to be your best technique ? I have ordered a wiping rod from Arizona Sharpshooters,is this something I will have to figure out what the rifle likes ? Are their some basic techniques ?
Looking to shorten the learning curve, thanks in advance for any helpful insight.

Without going into the BACO bore wipe system....
If you soak some 2 inch patches in 7-1 water/napa oil mix, then ring those patches out in a potato ricer, then push 1 thru the bore with a nylon brush works well. The deleon rod works well too, depending on how wet those patches are you can follow up with a dry patch. The trick is to not remove all the oil from the bore, so you don't have bare lead riding on dry metal, but not have a puddle of water in the bottom of the lands to bugger things up.

That's pretty much it. If you get leading, then experiment with damp/dry you are leaving the bore. In really hot weather I'll push three wet patches, but in cool weather two is good. In chronograph testing you'll see that the number of patches, will affect velocity SD. I've never had good results with a single patch when trying to minimize SD.
You might like the Tipton brushes more than the Dewey ones.

I use a nylon pistol dia and length brush.

Make sure the chamber is 'bone-dry' when you shoot.

I tried the pistol brushes, but the rifle size work better. I use 2 inch patches for 40 and smaller, and 2 1/2 inch 44 and 45.

Ordered the Tipton set as recommended by Chris, Yes Sir chamber is dry before shooting.
