Alma Mich. - Kurt - 05-09-2017 I shot Alma Michigan silhouette match again this weekend and first of all I will say that the Ladies and Gents are the finest shooters to spend a weekend with you can find. 28 shooters showed up for this weekend. Weather was clear but cold and the wind had it's hayday with straight head on cold wind that made your eyes water and shiver. I had several layers of shirts and sweat shirt and a wind breaker jacket and I still wish I had my red flannels on. ![]() I don't know what the velocity was but it went right through me. This range really showed me how to eat humble stew. I been in some pretty rough conditions in Montana and Nebraska but this weekend for me was something else. The wind flags where useless pointing in their own direction with none in the same direction most of the time the way the winds passed through the trees with open spaces and fresh 80 acres clear cut patch. The final scores over all showed the problem others had besides me except for one hard holder Glenn Fewless kept control of the conditions as always shooting his Wesson rifle. ![]() This was my third silhouette match that I have attended and the bug has taken a deep bite with me but last weekend I must say that I was at a point of frustration. I was not able to finish the last 5 shots do to a case separation at the base and I could not get the case out of the chamber. I think the case was out of a batch I got last year that was bad and I threw those in the brass bucket and missed a couple. All in all I enjoyed the time at that range. Kurt RE: Alma Mich. - Hiwall55 - 05-09-2017 Sound exactly like St.Louis in March, by my 4th shot my spotter said forget it ,the winds changed so fast you couldn't read it. I shot a 15 and Two master class shooters shot a pair of 17's. We couldn't go to Chillocothe because the range was under water from the Illinois River so we shot at PASA at 4,5 and 600 yards.Fun was had by all! RE: Alma Mich. - Kurt - 05-09-2017 I heard that Chillocothe was under water. It is a pretty low range. I haven't shot the CMP matches there for a long time. There will be more water coming down. We got 8 1/2" of rain in 5 days and the Rock river is high here. The mirages where flat lined at Alma and they would change 180 degrees even with a head on wind. It was interesting for sure. one of the Lady shooters talked to my Wife after the match and said don't let Kurt get to frustrated we want to see him coming back and not give up this game. RE: Alma Mich. - Don McDowell - 05-09-2017 Sillywets can be terribly frustrating. Someday I hope to find a front aperature that suits me especially on the rams. RE: Alma Mich. - Kurt - 05-10-2017 The rams are my best targets or have been. I like the post for silhouettes. Sunday when I was on the rams I started to run short of time because I spent to much time on the swinger. Carol gave me a left, your just off the butt. I had the DZ scope on the rifle. 1-1/2 minutes down on the knob...shot... your still off the butt....2 min down...shot... your still off the butt....one shot left it hit me DZ mounts down is right, opposite of the MVA .....came 5 1/2 up and hit needless to say that I didn't get another 26 to move me up in the game.Frustrating yes but fun.
RE: Alma Mich. - Don McDowell - 05-10-2017 I like the post for chickens, but don't find it gives enough definition on the turkeys or the rams. When shooting scope and those little wind switches hit, I find it better just to hold over to the left or right which ever is needed then when back to the conditions go back to the center hold. RE: Alma Mich. - Martini2 - 05-11-2017 Hi Kurt, we shot Alma matches last month. Found hosts genuine and gracious too. In fact experience was probable cause for my tip toe over to Dark Side. I hope to participate next month with new BP shooter. re the Wind, ever notice all the big fans (windmills:-) they have going up there. Maybe if they were switched off it would be dead calm for silhouettes RB
