44 badger barrel - Hiwall55 - 06-28-2017 Found a badger barrel,1.25 to 1.00 round tapered in 18 twist. I have an 18 twist on my 44-70 2.1 and it seems to handle 500 grain money bullets to the ram line. Any thoughts? I'm thinking 17 twist Green Mountain full octagon in #4 taper, but I don't know thats why I'm asking. RE: 44 badger barrel - Don McDowell - 06-28-2017 Either one I would think would be fine, altho the 17 twist would give a bit of an edge if you decided 500 gr wasn't heavy enough. RE: 44 badger barrel - Hiwall55 - 06-29-2017 Thanks Don Bill RE: 44 badger barrel - desert deuce - 06-30-2017 Have both, an 18 twist Badger 44-100 and a 17 twist Green Mountain in 44-70 Both shoot better than I can. Impressive actually. RE: 44 badger barrel - Hiwall55 - 07-01-2017 Desert Duece,is your 44-70 a 2.1 or 2.2 case? I have a 2.1 in a roller and want to build a 2.2 Maynard in a Hiwall or a CPA, got a reamer to use but the dies will cost me about as much as a barrel. BACO does have the dies. RE: 44 badger barrel - desert deuce - 07-01-2017 I don't know. I had the 44-70 barrel chambered and then had a full length sizing die cut with the chamber reamer. If I recall correctly, I then full length sized the 45-70 starline cases after annealing the case mouths then fire formed them with cornmeal which made them 2.15, I called it good and am still shooting the same brass. Have had to trim it only to make the case mouth square. As far as I can tell it is the same cartridge by two different names and the reamer blueprints only difference is the name in the corner as far as I can tell. Certainly is a dandy all round cartridge. RE: 44 badger barrel - Kurt - 07-01-2017 Kelley O Roos shot a . 44-70 Maynard Original rebuilt High-Wall, with a Krieger 17 twist barrel 32" long. He spoke highly of it and shot it well. I sure wish he would break his silence and get back on the forums. That fellow is a little controversial but hey he is a plumber
RE: 44 badger barrel - Hiwall55 - 07-01-2017 Yes it is a dandy round. I use Starline cases too and it shoots very well, I am taking it to a match tomorrow and if I dont win it won't be the guns fault. LOL THANKS BILL |
