Girly Gun - Kurt - 07-19-2017

HEY!!HEY!! Gail sent my new CPA .40-65 silhouette rifle Tongue Test fired one round with out wood on it to see what the case dimensions are and what a fired case looks like.......Perfect!! talking about a soft recoil.....just don't feel right Tongue
I will say the chamber is tight. The fired case will just except a .402" patched bullet with a firm push to get it in the Starline brass. I can always take metal off but not put more on.
Started working on the wood and just about good enough for the tung oil finish.
It is a light rifle with the #2.5 30" round tapered #2 Douglas barrel. It should make a fine silhouette rifle. If I get enough cases shot out and reloaded I might use it at Alma Michigan next month or at least take it with me to shoot some ladder loads to see what might work in it. I have high hopes for this little rifle......Kurt

Kurt,
I've shot the heavier calibers for a few years and to fire Dave's 12# 40-65, well, I had to ask him if it went off, LOL

He took it well!

LOL, I made a hip shot after I cleaned out the bore with out the wood on it, just the barreled action and I thought I used a 1/2 load Smile

RE: Girly Gun - Don McDowell - 07-19-2017

40-65 is a fun little cartridge.

RE: Girly Gun - rdnck - 07-20-2017

Don't sell the 40-65 short. I really like mine. A lot. Shoot straight, rdnck.

Ahhh I can see it now... the 50's will go into hiding!!

Don't tell anyone, but I shot one at the Q this year and it did just fine.......

sighhhh.......yes calamity is not happy in her dark iron box...I told her not to shake the ground and roar too loud because people didn't want to shoot along side of us, but she keeps saying I will behave if you get me out of here.....Tongue

Well said, Kurt!

Congrats Kurt on your new 40-65 smoker. Having been dabbling in said caliber with "Lucy" the Dark Powder rifle. I have special permission from wife for said afar. In fact she is one that insisted I needed new project rifle. Hmmmmmm, I guess next time I go to Alma I should have friend check homestead for "Ken" LOL I digress.
Point of fact it will be interesting to follow a master like Kurt set 40-65 records. Data watch to begin Smile

RE: Girly Gun - Kurt - 07-21-2017

LOL sounds like she has in mind for a rifle for her use. LOL
I shot 70 rounds through it today to fit the brass to the chamber with just junk swept up spilled powder I put in a can for this use and odd and end primers. No sense using the good stuff for this. I mounted a scope on the rifle because I forgot to order a front sight and the wood has three coats of oil on it so I figured it's time to get the brass blown out to fit the chamber.
I took a few shots after bore sighting the rifle and looked through the spotter scope and only saw two long holes ConfusedHuh Oh man here we go!! took 5 more and nothing on the three foot square paper at 200 yards Huh walked down range and two key holes in the paper and fresh spots in the wet sand berm all over the place....Oh brother what the hey is going on?? I thought well junk loads and just powder of hinze 57 mixes and just dropped in the case what do you expect Smile
I picked up the target frame and moved it to 50 yards for a close shot to see holes on the paper and on the way back from the 200 yard I saw hits in the wet dirt about 75 yards short, that made me feel better about the key holes Smile
Got the scope hitting center at 50 yards and moved it back to 200 and raised the sight 20" and shot around 30 rounds on the paper. I think this rifle will shot with good prepared loads and bullets. There where many shots through the same enlarged holes and about a 5" vertical and all holes not cutting where round Smile
One thing for sure the bullets are to tight. Shooting 70 rounds my thumb hurts from pushing them in and the action had to cam the last 5/16" in to close the breach. The 401" diameter patched bullets are to tight!! I slugged the bore tonight and three slugs measured .3899" and the groove .4070".
When the cases dry I will load some ladder loads with 1.5 and 2F OE and 1.5 swiss and see what comes about. I have a good feeling that making the reamer and the wait building this rifle is worth the effort.
