KIK powder - Don McDowell - 10-21-2012

Interesting observation on KIK powder fouling. Last night I was diggin thru the ammo boxes counting loaded rounds and came across a dozen fired cases. Those cases probably been there since at Ekalaka or there abouts.
The fouling was just a light grey crust in places.(had been patched loads) I deprimed and took them to wash, and the water instead of turning black, just turned a light tan/grey. There was some sand colored stuff laying in the bottom of the can.
Anyway it cleaned out of those cases really nice , and all appears to be well...

Hey Don:

I've been trying to get KIK to perform for me with at best limited success------------last test was heavily compressed 2f 45/70--------on cleaning the rifle on the bench i found a tan colored fouling seemingly "under" the normal black powder residue-------------took some work and 5 or 6 windex patches to clear it.

I haven't a clue what it was

Dave

Getting 2f KIK to work in the 45-70 for me was as simple as using the same charge weight as 2f express. Same with 1.5 and Cartridge.
Maybe that tan colored fouling you lifted out was just the rust blue from the bottom of the barrel lands.
What are you using for lube?

RE: KIK powder - Dave Roelle - 10-22-2012

Emmerts--------------------------barrel has about 2500 rounds thru it, its squeeky clean-----------thats what suprised me

I understand lots of folks have good results with KIK----------it hasn't proven so with this barrel for whatever reason-----for either money bullet or postell

I have some samples of the creedmore style on the way we'll see what happens with that design

current load is 74 gr swiss 1.5 and the 520 gr money bullet-----------1 1/2 minute groups to 300 meters and around 2 minutes to 500

direct replacement with KIK gets 4 to 5 minutes at 200 yards

2f express shoots almost as well as swiss

the search continues

I have 10 lbs of 2ff KIK schedualed for delivery today, I'll [post results on my first outing with it.

Dave change you lube. Watch the groups tighten.

RE: KIK powder - Dave Roelle - 10-22-2012

I'll try some SPG i have on hand, ya never know---------------with a little luck i can run the test next weekend

Bill Pace suggested a small addition of moly might help-----i have some on hand may make it a three lube test

thanks for restarting my thought train

Dave

No problem.
Now that Bullshop is back to filling orders, you may want to get a sample of the NASA lube. All of our rifles have responded very well to it.

RE: KIK powder - Dave Roelle - 10-22-2012

Yup i remember reading the testing that occurred when samples were sent to ya'll ---------------after that a quiet seemed to decend, a both positive and negative conclusion could be drawn-----"its great and keep it low key" or "this stuff wasn't as good as we thought"

i'll dig up the new contact info and order some

RE: KIK powder - Don McDowell - 10-22-2012

I bought 2 lbs of it. I think it's about the best beeswax based lube available.
