Picked up a Sharps in 44-70,2.1 chamber with dies and a BACO Postel 535 grain with a GM 17 twist. Tried some ladder loads yesterday ,69 grains of OE 1.5 with a .030 Walter wad shot very well to 200. Put an NBA on it and the 28 inch barrel was giving me fits to get on paper,a little turn seems to make a big difference.

Mine is a 44-70 with 32" 1x17 GM barrel. It is not fair to the other competitors for me to take it to a match. Way toooo accurate

Mine also has the 32" GM barrel. I'm trying to let it teach me how to shoot.

You may find that this is one of those rifles that you really need a machine rest for to determine accurately how well it shoots.

I'm just using mine over X-stick from the sitting position. Performance is pleasing too. Mine is a Hartford model from C. Sharps Arms and I'm using a Deluxe mid-range sight on the back with the changeable apertures and spirit level on the front.

Are your rifles chambered for GG or paper patched bullets? Also is the 44-70 a straight taper from head to mouth or does it have a straight neck section?
I had thought about going to this caliber but went with a 44-77 on a rolling block action instead. I am working on a Hepburn kit and am thinking of going with the 70 when I get around to putting a barrel on it, my guess is somewhere about 2 years down the road.

Sam, My .44/70 is from C. Sharps Arms and it has their standard 1/2-degree leade. That is usually very good with paper patch loads but at the present I'm working more with GG bullets, from a Brooks mold. I do have the KAL adjustable PP bullet but that seems to get used more in the .44/77 than in the .44/70, at least so far...
The taper to the case is very hard to see whereas the taper to a .40/65 is easy to see. I will suggest that the sized brass has a straight neck but to really see that you should refer to a drawing of the cartridge case. Perhaps C. Sharps Arms or Redding (the die maker) could provide that drawing. Shoot sharp, Mike

My 44-70 2.1 case has a .500 straight neck in it. My roller has a 18 twist and my Sharps has a 17 twist. I am building a 44-70 2.2 Maynard with a 18 twist Badger barrel.
