I've used the shooters friend recoil pad, but prefer the Limbsaver slip-on.

Like mine and I shoot a Shiloh #1 in .45-90.
You may also want to look into a mercury recoil reducer in the stock.

I use a Cabela's recoil pad that you wear on your shoulder since I need a cheek riser for long range; my slip on butt pad and the cheek riser don't work too well at the same time. The should pad I wear comfortably handled 45-100 loads shot every day for 9 days at Ben Avery. Your rifle can still show off it's butt plate and the shoulder pad is easy to take off your shoulder.
