40-50 Smokeless - Steveu - 11-17-2023 All, I sold my 40-50 to my neighbor who wants to load smokeless for it. He wants it for plinking and hunting pigs/deer. Bullets are the RCBS CSA 350 and SAECO 640. He has some 3031 on hand and I have some N135, N140, 2400 & Trailboss. I may be able to scrounge up some 5744. Anyone have any loads with what I have to use? Cheers, Steve RE: 40-50 Smokeless - Kurt - 11-17-2023 Steve, Good to see someone is still around. been quiet here.Steve give him this link http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell40-50SharpsContender.htm and here is the .40-50 BN https://loaddata.com/Metallic/MetallicPrintable?id=804 This little shell has caught my interest and I been doing some research for it. Kurt RE: 40-50 Smokeless - Randy Bohannon - 11-19-2023 40-50 Sharps Straight or BN ? I can look up either on Load Data.com Kurt’s got you covered. RE: 40-50 Smokeless - Steveu - 11-19-2023 Randy, Is a bottleneck. Most likely going to use 3031. Kurt, Thanks for the links. RE: 40-50 Smokeless - Randy Bohannon - 11-20-2023 Good that it’s the bottle neck, Load Data only shows one load from Mike Venturino and it’s a BP load for the Straight.. The load data web site shows 3031 not being very accurate,I suspect it’s a bit slow for the cartridge. Hopefully it works for you as I have 8 lbs of it and a Shiloh 1874 Military Carbine on order that will be chambered for the darling little cartridge. Do keep us apprised of your findings with your friends progress. RE: 40-50 Smokeless - Don McDowell - 11-21-2023 Old rule of thumb taken from ancient load manuals, say to start at 25% and go no higher than 45% of the black powder charge when using 2400, and 30% not to exceed 50% of the blackpowder charge with 4198 and 4227. the same could probably work with 5744, but staying on the lower end probably be the best. My 40+ year old Cartridges of the World list 21 gr. of 4198 with the 260 grain bullet. RE: 40-50 Smokeless - Steveu - 11-21-2023 Thanks Don for the info. I was considering a starting charge of 20-22 grains for the smokeless, based on my 52 grain charge with the Saeco 640 I have been using. RE: 40-50 Smokeless - Don McDowell - 11-21-2023 As long as the rifle is a modern rifle, you'll likely be ok, but I would definitely not start with 50% of the black powder charge weight. RE: 40-50 Smokeless - Steveu - 11-22-2023 It’s a Shiloh that was made in the early 90’s.
