LDPE wads and paper patching - Gunlaker - 05-09-2013 I've been using a 0.060" Veg King and 0.060" LDPE wad in my .45-70 for shooting paper patched bullets and it seems to work pretty well but I might have to rethink it a bit. I've tried the LDPE wads in my .45-110's but had odd flyers sometimes. Today I ran a two loads over the chronograph and found something interesting. Both loads used Norma cases, Winchester LR primers, and a .444 BACO Money bullet patched to bore diameter. Load A used 105gr of Goex Fg, 0.060" Veg King wad, 0.125" lube cookie, 0.030" Veg King. This is my current "standard" load for my CSA 1874. Load B used 110gr of Goex Fg, 0.060" Veg King wad, 0.060" LDPE wad. Load A averaged 1362 fps and was very consistent. I expected load B with 5gr more powder to be a little bit quicker, but it averaged only 1297 fps! There were a few weird flyers maybe 4 moa away from the core (200m) group. I happened to look down, and somehow the wind had blown one of my LDPE wads back so that it had landed right in front of my toe! Looking at the wad it appears that it burned through a bit on one edge. I guess it must not have sealed as well as the lube cookie and I expect that this is where the missing 65 fps went. I know that some of you have messed with different wad stacks before. Have you ever seen anything like this? thanks, Chris. RE: LDPE wads and paper patching - Don McDowell - 05-09-2013 Chris I'm thinking the lower velocity most likely was because you weren't getting a good bore seal as soon as the lube cookie did. If you have a NAPA store or such there, you might want to get some of their rubberized cork gasket material. That stuff works great to get the bore sealed, and it's really making this 44-77 set up and pay attention. Kenny uses that stuff and that's where I got the idea from and it dang sure worked wonders. That's what I was thinking too. I was amazed at the speed loss. How thick is that gasket material? I think I'll try some next week if I can find some. thanks, Chris. RE: LDPE wads and paper patching - Don McDowell - 05-10-2013 It's about like .060. The stuff I got is grey colored. Sure works good for me with 1/8 inch felt wad under it. RE: LDPE wads and paper patching - Gunlaker - 05-10-2013 Thanks Don. Once I get some I'll let you know how my rifle likes it. Chris. RE: LDPE wads and paper patching - Don McDowell - 05-10-2013 Looking forward to your experience with it. RE: LDPE wads and paper patching - Ironramrod - 05-10-2013 Don, are you using the rubberized cork wads in gg bullet loads or both gg and pp loads? I've heard of it, but don't know anything about it. Got any pointers you can share? Regards IR RE: LDPE wads and paper patching - Don McDowell - 05-10-2013 I'm just using them with the patched loads. The only pointer I have is it seems to work best if the felt is on the powder and the gasket under the bullet. I punch those with the Cornell wad punch I got from BACO They jumped the velocity quite a bit and that got the accuracy a tad better at 1k and got the velocity up to the point where it's not iffy for the standards at Raton. RE: LDPE wads and paper patching - Gunlaker - 05-16-2013 Don, I've got the rubberized cellulose material now. I've just got to wait for the rain to stop so I can fire some of them over the chronograph. I'll post the results when I do. Chris. RE: LDPE wads and paper patching - Don McDowell - 05-16-2013 Sounds good. |
