Question for paper patch shooters - Don McDowell - 05-15-2012
For those of you that shoot competition and wipe between shots. What is your favored patches, solution and routine?

1 part oil to 7 water, Nappa Cutting oil. Use Steve Rhoades delrin Rod. Proshot 2.5 inch patches, 2 or 3 damp wet patches, then 2 dry. Depends on heat and the humidity. Push the first one through then the second to the muzzzle then back most of the way then out. Usually this is enough unless its real hot and dry. The 2 dry l Like a real dry barrel for PP.

I have yet to try PP, though it seems I am leaning further in that direction lately. I do have a question regarding the above statements concerning wiping between shots though; are you guys shooting BPCR silhouette or something else? In silhouette, with 3 minutes a relay, that's 18 seconds a shot, how do you have time to wipe?

There's 7 minutes in the first 5 and 5 minutes the second five in bpcr silloutte.

in the interests of time, I push a bore pig well soaked in a 12% solution of Castrol soluble cutting oil with an arsenal patch in one pass.
pushing slowly allows the fouling to dissolve such that the drying patch is white.
the disadvantage of this is that a pig is harder to push than a loose patch.
it also probably does not clean the bore as well as 2 wets, the first going straight through and the second down, back, and down and out, followed by 1 or 2 dries.
this is the best if time allows.
getting the right sized jag has proven difficult to be just right with arsenal patches.
the creedmoor cup does not allow a lot of time for each shot.
pp works best with clean barrels, the cleaner the better for consistency. greasers might be a little more forgiving, but who wants to use them?

Bruce I push 2 wets, followed by a dry using a delron rod with a nylon brush. If you lay the patches out ahead of time, it's not a big deal, and probably just as fast and surer than a blowtube. (which I can do with a paper patch load in my 44-77)

Don, who's and what size nylon brush do you use in your 44? I had ordered some 44 brushes from Midway and they are in excess of a half inch in diameter. Someone want them? I have also tried a 44 cal pistol brush and it still seems to be a bit on the large size.
