Felt wads - Semtav - 07-18-2013 Anyone have a source for 3/8 thick felt or wool wads ? for the 45 cal. could stack three .125 too if needed but would prefer one wad. RE: Felt wads - Don McDowell - 07-18-2013 durofelt sells some 3/8 thick material, and there's an outfit called precision reloading that sells wads for the 410 and the 32 gauge in 3/8 in thickness. RE: Felt wads - Semtav - 07-18-2013 I've bought a lot of shotgun supplies from Precision. Never thought of 410 wads. Thanks RE: Felt wads - Don McDowell - 07-18-2013 Well I'm curious to what you've got up your sleeve with a wad that thick, sounds like some interesting load tests on the horizon. Do keep us posted. RE: Felt wads - Kurt - 07-18-2013 I think I would hesitate using 3/8" felt wad over over a card and a second or no card under the bullet. There is just to much air in that amount of felt to get compressed. I think the hydraulics of the compressed air will do damage a little at a time and start a ring. A 1/8" felt wad is more then enough if it is impregnated with a good oil or lube. Kurt RE: Felt wads - Semtav - 07-18-2013 I'm trying to come up with a filler when using Blackhorn 209 in the 45-90. The Puf-lon I'd been using is a mess and would like to try something simpler. Need to come up with a load that is user friendly to someone wanting to shoot a long range match while here visiting. I've had them use my BP loads before but they are not user friendly to someone that isn't a hardcore Black Powder shooter and just wound up with disasters. RE: Felt wads - Don McDowell - 07-18-2013 Crircle fly has some 1/2 thick fiber wads for 45 cal rifles. Track of the Wolf shows them on hand. RE: Felt wads - Semtav - 07-19-2013 yea, I saw those, that's thicker than I want. might have to resort to getting the 45-70 out and eliminating .2" of case. then a .125 would probably work. RE: Felt wads - Don McDowell - 07-19-2013 Been getting really good results in Carols rifle with just a .060 fiber wad. under the saeco 645 bullet, and 39 grs 209. Federal 215 match primer. RE: Felt wads - Kurt - 07-19-2013 3/8 inches of wads is a lot of wads. I would use something that would not expand under pressure like cork that will pull the case necks. I don't know anything about the 209 powder except what I read of people using it on the net and I understand it is a hot high pressure spiking powder. I was given a can of 209 because he did not want to use it and I'm not sure that I will either having to use their special cleaning solution, don't sound good to me. |
