50 mold - Stephen Borud - 08-08-2013

My friend cut the 50 cavity out tonight in my aluminum blocks. It looks really good. Can't wait to fondle the blocks on Monday! The mold should drop a .494 473 grain paper patch bullet. I did not make this mold adjustable so it will have a flat base.

drill the top of that thing and screw on a base plate with a bump on it,, fer hells sake.

Yes Dave it will be a hunting bullet. From the pictures I looked at he did a great job cutting the cavity.

Outstanding Stephen-----------looking forward to some pics

I cut some blocks out Ampcoloy 18 the other day------thinking of lathe cutting a 45 paper patch hunting bullet around 450 grains -----------it would also make a pretty good chicken bullet--we'll see.

The small body size of Texas whiteails leads me to believe a little quicker lighter slug would be the best approach ------OPINIONS ?

Dave I have shot a lot of 490-500 grain pp bullets in a 45 2 1/10 and 45 2 4/10th, in fact I killed a 5x5 whitetail buck, 2 antelope bucks and a couple of antelope does with both guns and that range of bullet. It worked very well. All shots were from 134-200 yards. None of the animals made it 40 yards. I like a .441 bullet patched with 9 lbs onion skin paper. It leaves a .001 a side for shooting dirty. I have also used a .440 bullet patched with the same paper with good results. I am not sure how a 450 would fly. Let me know Smile

85 grains of Fg express in the 2 4/10th
70 grains of Fg express in the 2 1/10th
Both bullets had straight sides.

Ok Stephen i'll let you know how things go----the mold will be adjustable and so "tuneable"-------thought i'd start near 400 and increase the length if 200 yard stability is an issue.

The hunting situation here will be south texas brush---its really desirable to kill them where they stand if at all possible---the brush can turn into solid pricklypear thats just about impassible without heavy equipement and a fuel truck.

With just a little luck i'll have some time to work on the mold this week--hope to do some testing next weekend.

Ill work out a diameter that lets me patch to say 0.002 diameter clearence to bore with the paper i have on hand--its 45 1/10--i'll see how fast i can run it Smile

Keep well and stay safe

Dave
