Preferred 45-90 brass for paper patch - Opencountry - 05-18-2012
Looking through Buffalo Arms reloading supplies I find two manufacturers of 45-90 brass, Starline and Winchester. Is Winchester a good brass for paper patch loading in this caliber? Is the brass long enough to be trimmed to properly fit the chamber of a Shiloh?

If I were going to make brass specifically for patched bullet shooting in the 45 2.1- 2.4, trimming down Norma basic works well. It's to thick in the walls at that point to allow for seating a patched bullet.
I have to do that for the long chambered Italian rifle I have (2.3). I asked Jamison once about their 2 7/8 brass and they said it would be to thick when trimmed that far back to allow for grease groove bullets, but should allow bore diameter patched without much fuss.

I was just going to ask if Norma basic (2.9") would work. For patched bullets of .450"-.451" it should be fine when trimmed to 2.4"?
Edit: Don, did you say the Norma basic brass was too thick or OK for a patched bullet when trimmed to 2.1-2.4? Sorry, I'm a little confused on your answer.

It's to thick for greasers trimmed that far, unless you do some neck turning. It works great for patched tho.

If it will accept the patched bullets then it should also accept the powder compression plug. I'll order one case, trim it to length, etc. before buying more.

The neck thickness of my Norma 2 7/8(2.9") is at .0115" at 2.886" length. Using my dial caliper I have an ID of .450" fireformed max., at 2.35" forward from the outside end of the case its still .450" ID using the calipers. I don't have any cases made from the 3 1/4" Norma basic maybe that is different. bobw

I use Norma .45-120 brass cut back for the .45-2.4 and it is good brass for the PP bullet.
You might anneal it for the fires shot and if using a Shiloh the first loading might be tight at the base just ahead of the rim and you might need to use a dowel to push the first fired case out. I did with my Shiloh for the first time shot.
But from there nothing needs to be done except clean the brass and load.
No need for sizing afterwards and .450 diameter bullet will stay put.
A greaser is to wide in diameter for this cut back brass.
My brass is cut back a little longer for my chamber then 2.4.
